Chapter 1513
Jonathan's expression darkened after the call. He strode from the room and stopped before Frieda's door. Ever since Aubreeโs departure, Frieda had been confined to her room, consumed by guilt. A knock startled her; she nearly tumbled from her bed.
โFrieda, itโs me. Open the door,โ Jonathan said, his tone firm and uncompromising.
Frieda lacked the courage to face him. โIโm not feeling well,โ she whispered, โCan we talk laterโฆ?โ
โIf you donโt open the door now, Iโll get the key,โ Jonathan insisted. He needed to speak with his sister immediately.
Frieda opened the door. โJonathan, whatโs so urgent?โ
Jonathan scrutinized her. โTwo million five hundred thousand is missing from the company accountsโduring your tenure. What did you spend it on?โ He'd initially assumed she'd bought luxury goods; it wasn't a vast sum, and he'd overlooked it. But Friedaโs recent behavior, in light of everything, had made him uneasy.
Friedaโs heart leaped. She lowered her head, flustered. โThat moneyโฆ umโฆ I used it to buy a bag.โ
Jonathan, knowing her well, sensed something was amiss. His heart sank. โA bag? Where is it?โ
โItโs a pre-order,โ Friedaโs voice softened, โItโll be some time before it arrives.โ
โShow me the receipt, then,โ Jonathan pressed.
Frieda remained silent. She had lied; there was no receipt.
โDid you give that money to Aubree?โ Jonathan asked bluntly.
A shiver ran down Friedaโs spine. โI gave Aubree some money out of pity. I couldnโt bear to see her so miserable. Our families were close. Iโโ
Jonathan, simmering with anger, interrupted. โHow many times have I told you not to contact her? You disobeyed me and gave her our familyโs money!โ
Frieda felt overwhelmed by his rage, avoiding his blazing eyes as she looked down. He pushed her into the room and slammed the door.
Fear washed over Frieda as the sound echoed.
โTell me honestly,โ Jonathanโs voice was low, โAre you involved in Aubreeโs disappearance?โ His gaze suggested he suspected her complicity.
Frieda gritted her teeth. โI donโt know what youโre talking about. I gave her money, but long before she disappeared.โ
Jonathan narrowed his eyes. โLong before? I donโt recall telling you when she disappeared.โ
Panic filled Friedaโs eyes as she abruptly lifted her head. She shook her head, biting back her fear. โI donโt know. I donโt know anythingโฆโ
โWhere is she? Has she really escaped?โ Jonathan paused, softening his tone. โIf you know where she is, tell me. If sheโs fled Herington, weโll monitor all major routes into the city to prevent her return. Then we can arrest her immediately. Youโll no longer have to contact her, and I wonโt worry about the Queen familyโs implication.โ
