Chapter 1521
The two worked until eight o'clock that evening. After leaving the laboratory, Jack checked the time and suggested, "It's late. Let's get something to eat. We haven't seen each other in a while."
Roxanne apologetically declined. "Let's do that another time. I'm too tired tonight."
"I'll drive you home," he offered.
Her previous suspicions resurfaced, causing her concern. "Thank you, Mr. Damaris, but I drove myself. Getting to work tomorrow would be difficult if you dropped me off, so it's best if I don't." Without waiting for a response, she added, "It is late. Let's go."
Jack frowned as she turned to leave and followed her to the institute entrance. Just as Roxanne was about to enter her car, he said, "Oh, if you're free tomorrow afternoon, come to Damaris Group. We haven't discussed the new drug's profit distribution. Now that the research is complete, it's time to address that."
She readily agreed. "All right. I'll be there."
After a brief farewell, they departed in their separate cars. Jack's frown deepened as he watched her drive away slowly.
Her attitude toward Lucian and him was starkly different. She was wary of him. Lucian must have said something! He couldn't risk her completely distancing herself. If that happened, any future cooperation would be impossible.
This thought led him to glance maliciously at a box of custom sandalwood incense beside him. A sneer touched his lips as he inhaled its fragrance.
Even if Lucian's words held weight, so what? He'd already made his move! Roxanne would never escape him!
On her drive home, Roxanne pondered Jack's recent behavior. Something felt amiss, though she couldn't quite place it. Even as her car pulled up to the mansion, the mystery remained unsolved.
Absentmindedly, Roxanne exited her car and locked the door. Then she noticed the mansion was brightly litโeven her second-floor room!
She stopped abruptly, a feeling of apprehension washing over her. She was certain she'd turned off the lights when she left. The children were with Lucian; no one should be home. Even if he'd brought them back, no one would enter her room.
Aubree's face flashed in her mind. Instinctively, she reached for her phone to call Lucian.
Before she could, the mansion door opened. Archie peeked out. Seeing her, he opened the door wide. "Mommy, why aren't you coming in?"
Relief washed over Roxanne. "Why are you all back?" she asked.
Archie's eyes darted around. "Daddy didn't want us to tell. You'll see when you come in."
His cryptic answer puzzled her. As soon as she entered, she saw small boxes in the living room. Benny and Estella were busy packing toys.
