Chapter 1534: Could Not Wait Any Longer
โWhatโs wrong? I noticed you havenโt touched your wine,โ Jack observed, concern lacing his voice. He looked at Roxanne, his hand reaching for her wrist. โAre you unwell? Whatโs the matter? Can I help?โ
Roxanne pursed her lips, offering a weak smile. โNo need. Iโm just tired; I didnโt sleep well. Please enjoy yourselves. Iโll rest.โ
She subtly avoided his touch, giving a slight nod before turning away. Displeasure flickered across Jackโs face as he watched her go. The hickey on her neck explained her sleepless night. He couldn't wait; he needed to act.
After leaving the banquet, Roxanne sought refuge in a nearby cafรฉ. But the memory of Jackโs behavior reignited her annoyance. Then, a message arrived from Lucian: โHow are you feeling? Rest if youโre tired. The institute can wait.โ
His concern warmed her, but her reply was tinged with irritation: โSo you knew Iโd be tiredโฆ But itโs okay. The medicationโs done, and weโre celebrating.โ
Lucian frowned at her terse message. He replied, โIs Jack there?โ
Roxanneโs frustration mounted at the mention of Jack. โHe initiated the celebration. I couldnโt refuse; everyone was in high spirits.โ Her reply subtly conveyed her displeasure.
Lucian, however, was preoccupied with something else. โDid you drink?โ
Roxanne grimaced in reply: โThey are, but Iโm not.โ Immediately, Lucian called.
โWhatโs wrong? Are you unwell? Should I come get you?โ his voice was gentle and reassuring.
Roxanne sighed. โI felt a bit off this morning, but Iโm better now.โ
Lucianโs brow furrowed. โThen what is it? Is it my mother? Did she say something?โ
Roxanne quickly clarified, โNo, itโs Jackโฆโ Her voice betrayed her upset. She felt powerless against an outsider encroaching on her employees' loyalty, a blow to her authority as head of the institute.
Lucian's displeasure at Jack's actions was evident. โWhatโs he doing? Donโt let him bother you. He seems attentive, but his motives are questionable.โ
Roxanne felt discouraged. โAm I incompetent? The institute feelsโฆ disorganized since Colby left.โ Sheโd been reflecting on this over her coffee. She was relatively new, didnโt know the staff well, and had focused solely on research, neglecting her relationships with them. Colby had previously handled those relationships. After his arrest, the distance grew, allowing Jack to easily cultivate their affections.
Lucianโs expression grew serious. โWhy do you say that?โ
Roxanne, emboldened by Lucianโs presence, confessed, โIt feels like the staff are closer to Jack than me. He seems to be in charge, not me.โ
