Chapter 1539: Feel Safer

Roxanne felt touched by his words. The dinner, enjoyed without Sonya, was heartwarming. For the first time, Lucian didn't rush off afterward, allowing the children to chat with both parents late into the night. While the children were delighted, Roxanne wasn't in the mood to play, and Lucian still had work to do. They naturally tucked the children in before returning to their respective spacesโ€”the study and the bedroom. It felt as though they had been living together for a long time.

The bedroom was empty when Roxanne emerged from the shower, so she assumed Lucian was still working. It being late, she decided to suggest he rest. As she reached the door, her phone on the nightstand rang. She retrieved it, seeing Jack's name on the caller ID. Remembering his earlier behavior, she hesitated to answer. However, the ringing persisted, forcing her to pick up. "What is it, Mr. Damaris? It's very late," she said.

"Sorry to disturb you. I didn't want to call so late, but I felt I needed to apologize for earlier," Jack said apologetically.

Roxanne frowned, confused by his sudden change in demeanor. Not wanting to prolong the awkwardness, she chuckled softly. "It's fine. You'd had too much to drink; I'll pretend I didn't hear it."

Jack sighed in relief. "Thank you. I wouldn't have called after learning about your relationship with Mr. Farwell. We've worked together a long time; I consider you a business partner. But I got carried away today, and it slipped out. I'm sorry I lost my composure. I didn't frighten you, did I?"

Why does it sound like he's confessing again? Roxanne thought, frowning. She replied coldly, "No. You said things you shouldn't have. If you're truly sorry, don't bring it up again."

Jack's tone remained cautious, though a coldness crept into his voice. "All right. I'll remember that. By the way, you mentioned our profit-sharing model. We should settle that soon. I'm embarrassed I got so sidetracked I forgot."

Mentioning work eased Roxanne's unease. "Then let's meet tomorrow to discuss it, Mr. Damaris?"

Jack readily agreed. "Of course. I'll see you at the research institute."

After considering, Roxanne agreed, and they set a time before ending the call. Lucian entered then, witnessing her hang up. "Who were you talking to so late?" he asked, frowning.

Roxanne replied evasively, "Mr. Damaris called to schedule a meeting about the contract tomorrow. I initially suggested Damaris Group, but since he's partly responsible for the delay, we decided on the research institute instead."

Given their history, Roxanne felt it safer to meet him on her own turf.
