Chapter 1604: Where Are You Going?
Lucian felt sorry for the boys when he heard their story. Archie and Benny's current residence was the place they'd traveled to alone. He remembered a previous incident where older children had nearly beaten them while they searched for Estella. This fueled his resentment toward Sonya. They were so young! Even if their grandmother refused to acknowledge them as her grandchildren, they were Estella's best friends. How could she be so cruel as to abandon them at the amusement park? He was thankful nothing untoward had happened, but the thought of what could have happened chilled him. How would he face Roxanne?
He shuddered. "We're clever boys, and we met a very kind taxi driver who wouldn't accept our money," Archie said in a cute voice, sensing Lucian's anger.
Lucian knew his sons were defending their grandmother. He pulled them into a hug. "I'm sorry I haven't taken better care of you. Grandma was too much! If she takes you out again, call me immediately, and I'll handle it."
The boys quieted, bobbing their heads obediently as Lucian comforted them. He patted their backs, praising them. "Both of you did very well today protecting yourselves and not telling Mommy. This is our secret. Don't tell Mommy, okay? Mommy's very tired these days."
The boys smiled. "We know, and we won't worry Mommy."
Lucian released them. "Go play with your sister. I need to go out for a bit."
Their faces fell. They grabbed his sleeve. "Daddy, don't be mad at Grandma. You promised!"
Lucian hadn't expected their sensitivity. "Oh, I'm not going to Grandma's. I have something to deal with at the office." Pacifying them was easy for an experienced businessman.
Archie and Benny scrutinized him before releasing his arm. "Okay, then..."
Lucian smiled and walked toward the living room. Roxanne had just finished a phone call with Jonathan and returned to Estella. She was surprised to see him leaving. "What happened? Where are you going at this hour?"
"I need to handle some matters. I'll be right back," Lucian replied, quickly striding out of the mansion before she could ask more.
Roxanne noticed his haste and sensed something was amiss. Shortly after, Archie and Benny entered, and she turned her attention to them.
"How was your outing? Did Grandma give you a hard time?"
Finally, she could ask, Lucian being absent.
"Nope! We had a ton of fun!" the boys exclaimed, relieved after confiding in Lucian.
Roxanne then questioned Estella, who had been crying all afternoon and hadn't enjoyed herself at all. However, she nodded cooperatively, snuggling into her mother's arms. Roxanne knitted her brows skeptically.
