Chapter 16: Their Relationship

After observing their interactions several times, Jonathan sensed something was amiss. He'd noticed Lucian's attitude toward Roxanne was far from what he expected.

Jonathan watched Lucian's gaze follow Roxanne and Larry, his eyes narrowing whenever Larry made Roxanne laugh. Lucian's displeasure was palpable.

Deciding to investigate, Jonathan casually approached Lucian. "Lucian, you seem to know Dr. Jarvis quite well. How long have you two known each other?"

Lucian's expression tightened before he composed himself. "We've known each other for a while. Our paths have crossed professionally on several occasions."

Jonathan nodded. "I see. She's very accomplished and well-regarded. It's no wonder she's impressed you."

Lucian's jaw clenched slightly, but he merely nodded. "Yes, she's very talented."

Jonathan pressed further. "And Dr. Morrison? They seem close. Do you know him well?"

Lucian's eyes darkened at the mention of Larry. "Dr. Morrison is a respected colleague from Roxanne's time abroad. They worked together on several projects."

Jonathan noticed the tension in Lucian's voice. "It must be nice for her to have a familiar colleague now that she's back."

Lucian remained stoic, but a flicker of something appeared in his eyes. "Yes, it's good for her to have support."

Seeing he'd struck a nerve, Jonathan backed off. "Well, it's great to see such talented individuals collaborating. I'm sure their work will yield excellent results."

Lucian nodded curtly, ending the conversation. "Indeed."

As the evening progressed, Lucian's unease persisted. He watched Roxanne and Larry closely, his mind racing with uncontrollable thoughts.

Roxanne, oblivious to the tension, enjoyed catching up with Larry. Their conversation flowed easily as they reminisced about their time abroad and discussed current projects.

Larry leaned in, his tone serious. "Roxanne, have you considered collaborating on a research project? Our combined expertise could make a significant impact."

Roxanne's eyes lit up. "That sounds wonderful, Larry. I'd love to. What did you have in mind?"

Larry smiled. "I have a few ideas. Let's discuss them in detail. We could create something groundbreaking."

Lucian's patience wore thin. He couldn't stand idly by. With a determined stride, he approached Roxanne and Larry.

"Roxanne," he interrupted firmly, "May I speak with you?"

Roxanne looked up, surprised. "Of course, Lucian. Excuse me, Larry."

Larry nodded, watching with mild curiosity as Roxanne joined Lucian.

Lucian's expression was serious. "I need to talk to you about something important."

Roxanne's brow furrowed. "What is it, Lucian?"

He hesitated, searching for the right words. "I've noticed your interactions with Dr. Morrison. It's clear you have a close relationship."

Roxanne's eyes widened. "Yes, we do. We've been friends and colleagues for years. Why do you ask?"

Lucian took a deep breath. "I want to ensure you're aware of how others might perceive it. Maintaining a professional image is important, especially in our field."

Roxanne frowned, sensing more to his concern. "Are you worried about my reputation, Lucian? Or is there something else?"

Lucian's gaze softened, but he remained firm. "I care about your reputation, Roxanne. But more than that, I care about you. I don't want to see you hurt or misunderstood."

Roxanne's expression softened. "I appreciate that, Lucian. But you don't have to worry about Larry and me. We're just friends, and our professional relationship is strictly that."

Lucian nodded, though unease lingered. "I trust you, Roxanne. I just want you to be careful."

She smiled, squeezing his hand. "I will, Lucian. Thank you for looking out for me."

Returning to the group, Lucian felt relieved. His feelings for Roxanne were growing stronger, and he hoped she would one day understand his feelings.
