Chapter 1644: Obliged To Do
At the mention of Roxanne's condition, the hostility radiating from Colby gradually subsided.
"The experts I've hired suspect Jack used a specific herb, but they can't identify it," Lucian said.
Colby noticed a detail. "Did you ask Jack?" How else would Lucian know so much about the drug?
Lucian nodded.
"I think Jack won't easily save Dr. Jarvis!" scoffed Colby. "He must have a ridiculously unreasonable demand you won't meet, even for her sake. That's why you came to me." Leaning back, Colby added, "If your love for Dr. Jarvis only extends that far, I have no reason to help. Surely you're aware we're rivals for her affections, Mr. Farwell?"
Lucian frowned. "If he'd made demands, I would have complied. However, Jack is deliberately stalling. I can't wait any longer!"
What Lucian meant was that Jack hadn't made any demands; he was toying with Lucian, using Roxanne's life as bait.
Colby raised an eyebrow, sitting up straight. "He's a blasted hypocrite. Of course, we can't count on him!"
Colby narrowed his eyes, falling into deep thought. "Since the drug was inhaled, how did Jack escape unscathed? He must have taken an antidote beforehand. I suspect the antidote's effect is time-limited; otherwise, Jack would have been affected by prolonged exposure."
This was consistent with the researchers' findings, but Colby was more observant. Lucian finally understood Linda's comment about Colby's unique aptitude.
Colby, immersed in thought, mumbled medicinal herb names, instantly visualizing their suitability as antidotes. Lucian, lacking this expertise, could only wait anxiously.
After a while, Colby's expression soured. "Hundreds of herbs have varying properties. One wrong choice could create a harmful interaction. I need to be cautious. For now, I can't be certain."
Lucian's expression grew grimmer.
"But since Jack likely wants something in return, the drug's potency isn't overwhelmingly virulent. For now, Dr. Jarvis will be fine. Give me two days. Come see me then," Colby added. He remained confident a solution could be found.
Two days? Lucian wasn't sure he could wait that long, but he agreed; there was no alternative.
"I understand. Thank you, Dr. Galloway," Lucian said.
Colby nodded, but something remained on his mind. As Lucian turned to leave, Colby stopped him. "Mr. Farwell?"
Lucian stopped. "Is there anything else, Dr. Galloway?"
Colby's gaze fixed on Lucian's face. He recalled his excessive actions toward Roxanne and Lucian's fury. He expected hatred, but Lucian's courtesy surprised him. He'd assumed Lucian would see his help as an obligation.
