Chapter 1653: Down in the Dumps
Just then, Lucian received a call from Madilyn. Frowning, he answered, immediately inquiring about Roxanne's condition. "How's Roxanne?"
Madilyn gazed at her friend on the hospital bed, her voice somber. "There are no changes. We haven't been able to determine anything, even after discussing her condition all afternoon." She sighed helplessly.
Lucian's heart sank. "I'll head over right away."
"It won't help if you're not a doctor," Madilyn countered. "I called to ask if you've contacted the Queen family." They were prominent in the medical field; their help might determine the exact herbs Roxanne inhaled.
Only then did Lucian remember. "I'll do that immediately."
Madilyn murmured her acknowledgment. They hung up.
Lucian had been so panicked he'd overlooked the Queen family's assistance. Indeed, he wouldn't have considered it without Madilyn's call.
It was late. Jonathan sat cross-legged in his study, reviewing his schedule with his assistant. He never expected the Queen family to profit so readily from their mediation. Roxanne's new medicine would soon revolutionize the medical world, and the Queen family would be inextricably linked to its success, boosting their reputation considerably. He mused on their bright future.
Then, his butler's voice rang out. "Mr. Queen, Mr. Farwell is downstairs."
Jonathan corralled his thoughts. "Why is he waiting downstairs? Tell him to come up!" Their families were close; he and Lucian were like brothers.
As the butler started to go downstairs, Jonathan emerged. "Never mind. It's probably urgent. I'll go down!"
He hurried downstairs. Lucian sat on the couch, rapidly consuming coffee. A stranger might have thought he was drinking wine.
"Why so late, Lucian?" Jonathan's heart sank. He sat beside Lucian, pouring himself coffee, then casually refilled Lucian's cup. Lucian immediately drained half of it. Jonathan noticed the coffee grounds had also significantly diminished.
He realized his friend was despondent. Could something have happened to Roxanne? He couldn't think of another explanation.
