Chapter 1654: Created An Opportunity
โWhy are you here alone? Whereโs Roxanne?โ Jonathan asked cautiously. The mere mention of Roxanne plunged the room into a chilling silence. He quickly fell silent, waiting for Lucian to speak.
A long moment passed before Lucianโs voice, heavy with exhaustion, broke the stillness. โSomething has happened to Roxanne.โ
Though Jonathan had suspected as much, his heart clenched at Lucianโs tone. Knowing Lucian, Roxanne must be in serious trouble.
โIs there anything I can do to help?โ Jonathan offered.
Lucian put down his coffee, leaning back against the couch. He covered his eyes with his hands. His voice was grim. โJack poisoned her. Sheโs been unconscious for a day and a night. Iโve had numerous doctors examine her, but theyโre helpless. They canโt even identify the poison.โ
Jonathan was shocked. โJack? He actually dared toโฆโ He stopped, noticing Lucianโs grave expression. He suppressed his surprise, focusing on finding a solution.
โCalm down,โ he said. โThe Queen family has extensive medical connections. Many renowned doctors are reclusive, unavailable even with money. But using my grandfatherโs name, I might persuade one or two. Iโll send out invitations immediately.โ
He immediately called his assistant, instructing him to prepare and send invitations to those secluded doctors that very night.
Lucian thanked him hoarsely, โThank you.โ
Jonathan frowned. โThereโs no need for that between us. If we were being formal, shouldnโt I be thanking you and Roxanne for all your help?โ The Pearson familyโs support had nearly doubled the Queen familyโs scale, and Roxanneโs new medicine would further enhance their reputation.
Lucian sighed, offering no reply.
Perceiving his worry, Jonathan said, โDonโt worry. Someone as kind as Roxanne will pull through. After saving countless patients, God wonโt take her so easily.โ Despite his words, he felt less confident. The Damaris family, with their century of herbal research and recent seclusion, were formidable. He wondered what insidious tactic Jack had employed.
โHopefully,โ Lucian murmured, sitting upright. He picked up his coffee, his hand trembling uncontrollably.
Jonathan was profoundly shocked. He knew Lucian loved Roxanne deeply, but heโd never seen him so shaken. He also realized Lucian only revealed this vulnerability to him. To the world, he would remain the impassive โMr. Farwell.โ Jonathan felt a deep sympathy for him. He knew how difficult it had been for Lucian and Roxanne to be together, only for tragedy to strike at last.
โIn truth,โ Lucian said, his voice laced with self-reproach, โshe could have avoided this.โ
Jonathan looked at him questioningly.
โShe was negotiating with Jack about the new medicine, and I offered a suggestion. Because of that, she was persistent, seeking him out repeatedly. We never considered that each meeting created an opportunity for him.โ He continued, "If I hadn't said anything, she wouldn't have worried about the profit split. If she'd agreed to his proposal, none of this would have happened."
