Chapter 1696: There Will Be One
Lucian and Elektra left the ward. Madilyn, tired from a sleepless night, followed them.
"Here," Madilyn said, producing the dishes sent by the director. "Now that Roxanne's awake, we can relax."
Elektra took the dishes. "I'll heat them up." Noticing Lucian's gloomy demeanor, Madilyn hurried after her. The women were unaware of the conversation between Lucian and Roxanne, leaving them perplexed by the couple's somber mood. All they could do was allow Lucian time to compose himself.
By the time they returned, Lucian appeared slightly better. Elektra divided the food into three portions, offering one to Madilyn and Lucian. Lucian frowned, about to refuse, when Elektra insisted, "Just eat. You look terrible. Replenish your energy; Ms. Jarvis needs you." She gently pushed the plate closer.
He accepted. His frown softened. "Thank you. I didn't expect you to agree to my request." He had assumed a wealthy woman like Elektra would hesitate when he'd revealed the truth at the Farwell main residence. Her immediate agreement had been a surprise. A moment's hesitation, he realized, could have been fatal for Roxanne. The thought pierced him.
A fleeting look of concern crossed Elektra's eyes as she observed his distress. She quickly smiled when he looked at her. "You don't need to thank me. It's what we do when we're close. If not for Ms. Jarvis, perhaps I might be your wife now."
Lucian's gaze darkened. "Youโ"
Madilyn, startled, approached, eyeing Elektra with suspicion. The last person to speak in such a way had been Aubree. Elektra seemed so innocent, but could she be similar to Aubree?
Seeing their serious expressions, Elektra chuckled. "It's a joke. Though I envy your treatment of Ms. Jarvis, I'm sure I'll find a man who treats me similarly eventually." Her smile was genuine.
Lucian stared at her for a moment before relaxing, nodding. "I'm sure there will be one."
Madilyn agreed. "Ms. Lane, you're beautiful. Many men must admire you."
"I'd rather not have many admirers," Elektra replied, sounding slightly exasperated. "It's too difficult to find sincerity amidst so many."
Madilyn found her words amusing. They seemed like old friends reunited. Meanwhile, Lucian gazed out the window at Roxanne, surrounded by medical specialists, a warmth evident in his eyes.
The three ate in the corridor, the atmosphere vastly different from the ward.
