Chapter 1701: I Can Save Myself

โ€œMadilyn is worried about me and kept asking how Iโ€™m doing,โ€ Roxanne replied with a smile.

Lucian nodded, then asked casually as he sat beside the bed, โ€œI noticed a doctor was absent when I arrived. Did he tell you where he was going?โ€

Roxanneโ€™s smile faltered. She hadnโ€™t expected Lucian to notice, let alone inquire. Regaining her composure, she replied calmly, โ€œIโ€™m not sure. Iโ€™ll be fine as long as people are around; it doesnโ€™t matter if one or two step away. Iโ€™ve already regained consciousness, so you donโ€™t need so many standing by. Let them rest.โ€

She sighed helplessly.

Lucian seemed thoughtful, peeling an apple heโ€™d retrieved from a grocery bag. โ€œKnowing you, Roxanne, you wouldnโ€™t want dessert immediately after recovering, let alone have me buy it from so far away. You probably need time alone, butโ€ฆ hmmโ€ฆ your reaction, and the expertsโ€™ outside, seem suspicious. You must have told them something while I was gone. Given the situation, it must be about the poisoning.โ€

A gloomy look clouded his eyes. He stopped peeling the apple, staring solemnly at Roxanne. โ€œIs it true the poison has been completely removed?โ€

After a pause, Roxanne chuckled helplessly. โ€œYou noticed?โ€ She hadnโ€™t expected him to discover her deception so quickly.

โ€œI planned to tell you after finding a way to neutralize the poison. Iโ€™m sorry I lied after promising not to keep secrets,โ€ she said apologetically.

Lucian frowned, anger flickering in his eyes. โ€œDid Jack pull a trick? A fake antidote?โ€

Roxanne shook her head. โ€œThe antidote is real. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s just what?โ€ Lucianโ€™s tone grew colder.

Since he knew, Roxanne decided to be honest. โ€œThe dosage was incomplete. I need four or five times more to completely rid my body of the poison. I spoke with the experts; we have a lead, so donโ€™t worry too much.โ€

Anxiousness flickered in Lucianโ€™s eyes, but he quickly composed himself. โ€œOh, Iโ€™m not worried. I could deal with him again if necessary.โ€

Roxanne felt touched. She caressed his cheek reassuringly. โ€œThat wonโ€™t be necessary. Iโ€™m confident I can save myself. I mean, I developed a drug even the Damaris family couldnโ€™t!โ€

Jack, when they were still on good terms, had shown her some of the Damaris familyโ€™s ancient medical texts, filled with information on rare herbs. Roxanne suspected the key to the antidote lay within those books, and fortunately, sheโ€™d memorized them. Once the blood test results were in, she could use that information to identify the poison and synthesize an antidote herself.
