Chapter 1764: On Our Guard
Lucian was understandably anxious about Roxanne leaving his side so soon after her recovery, especially given recent events.
โGo back first,โ he said. โI want to spend some more time with Madilyn.โ
Roxanne sensed her best friend had something else to say and agreed to stay with Madilyn. Lucian frowned, his worry evident.
Madilyn understandingly suggested, โIf youโre worried, Mr. Farwell, you can have someone follow us. I certainly wonโt take Roxanne anywhere to betray you.โ
Lucian immediately agreed. โItโs decided then. Iโll have someone follow you both for protection. Call me when youโre finished, and Iโll pick you up.โ His plan was clearly pre-meditated.
Madilyn had no objections, teasing Roxanne, โThings are indeed different when one is attached.โ
Roxanne blushed slightly, simply telling Archie, Benny, and Estella, โYour Aunt Madilyn and I will be back later. Be good and listen to your daddy.โ The children readily obeyed.
Lucian made a call, waiting until his subordinates were in place before driving away.
Later, at a quiet bar, Roxanne asked Madilyn, โWhatโs wrong? Is something else the matter?โ
Madilyn hesitated, looking uncomfortable. โIt isnโt a big dealโฆโ she began, taking a guilty sip of wine, her gaze flitting around.
Roxanneโs curiosity was piqued. โWhy are you beating around the bush, considering our relationship?โ
After a long pause, Madilyn said, โDo you still remember Ms. Lane?โ
Roxanne took a moment to recall. With so much happening in the past two days, and only a brief encounter with Elektra, she hadn't given her much thought.
โYeah,โ Roxanne replied. โLucian explained theyโre good friends. What about her?โ
Madilyn sighed. โI thinkโฆ while Mr. Farwell was quite a scoundrel six years ago, heโs a truly decent man now, a rarity. Ms. Lane grew up with him, and the timing of her return is suspicious. You should be careful; she might be another Aubree.โ
She quickly clarified, โI donโt mean anything by that. Iโve seen how much Mr. Farwell cares about you, and I believe he wonโt change. But we donโt know Ms. Laneโs intentions. Itโs best to be cautious!โ
Madilynโs fear stemmed from her experiences with Aubree. She was happy for her best friend but worried about her vulnerability, given Lucian's popularity. Since Roxanneโs return, Madilyn had nearly lost her twice, and she didn't want a third time.
Roxanne frowned, Elektraโs face gradually coming into focus. After considering her memory of the woman, she shook her head. โI donโt think sheโs that kind of person.โ Elektraโs gaze had seemed sincere, and Lucianโs opinion of her was positive. She trusted her intuition.
Madilyn insisted, โIโm just warning you. Elektra even told me, while you were unconscious, that she has no designs on Mr. Farwell. Still, it doesnโt hurt to be vigilant.โ
