Chapter 1765: What Is His Motive?

“Got it. I’ll be more careful around her,” Roxanne agreed with a smile, understanding her best friend’s concern.

Madilyn was satisfied. Soon, they were chatting about other things, the atmosphere relaxed.

Meanwhile, Jonathan returned to the Queen family home from the police station after handling Jack’s case. He found his sister Frieda on the couch, watching television, occasionally glancing toward the door.

Frieda’s expression brightened upon seeing him. “I saw the news about Jack’s arrest, Jonathan. Roxanne’s awake, right?”

Jonathan nodded. “Yes. She regained consciousness last night. We were busy with Jack’s case and didn’t have time to tell you.”

Roxanne’s awakening was thanks to Frieda’s engagement of Peregrine’s services; informing Frieda was only right. He expected chagrin, but saw no displeasure on her face. Then, her meaningful voice cut through the air:

“Old Mr. Lomax must have played a pivotal role, huh? Did Lucian say anything about it?” She was clearly angling for credit.

Jonathan’s brows furrowed slightly; he felt a touch of irritation. Her contribution had been crucial, so Lucian thanking her was natural. However, she should have let him offer his appreciation. Moreover, helping Roxanne was, in a way, atonement for past actions. How could she ask for a reward?

Receiving no response, Frieda’s expression turned resentful. “You know how difficult it was to convince Old Mr. Lomax! I spent tremendous effort saving Roxanne. Regardless of my past, I don’t owe her anything anymore!”

Jonathan’s expression darkened. “What are you talking about?”

“It’s true! You’re close to her and saved her, but not me! Even if she saved Grandpa, the herbs we gave her repaid that debt. I’m not doing her such a huge favor for nothing!” Frieda retorted angrily.

“Shut up!”

Jonathan’s face thundered. Staring intently at his sister, he demanded, “Tell me the truth. How did you get Old Mr. Lomax to help? Did you really find his contact online? Or was it the man behind you?”

He doubted Peregrine’s contact information was easily obtained. He hadn’t pressed it before due to lack of time. But now, given Frieda’s insistence on a thank-you, he needed answers.

He stared at her. “Was he also the one who told you to say all this? What’s his motive?”

His questions struck Frieda like cannonballs. She hadn’t discussed how to answer them with Shawn. Guilt overwhelmed her. She opened her mouth, but no justification came.

Jonathan’s heart sank. “You ignored everything I told you, huh?”
