Chapter 1799: My Mother Does Not Believe It
Lucian frowned, glaring at his mother. "Mom, it was an accident. What are you talking about?"
"Yes, an accident," Sonya replied, "but you were careless. Letting your child perform with animals is dangerous. Roxanne should have been more meticulous."
Lucian fumed, realizing Sonya blamed Roxanne entirely. "Mom, are you here to see me or to make accusations? If you continue this, you might as well not come."
Sonya was speechless, stunned by her son's harsh words. She wanted to scold him but refrained. "All right," she said calmly. "I won't talk about it. But I've been worried about the children. May I raise my doubts? May I ask Roxanne for evidence?"
Lucian couldn't avoid the issue. Even if his family believed him, the Farwell branch families might not. After considering this, he nodded. "Okay. I'll get a paternity test done."
Sonya smiled, her wish fulfilled. She didn't believe the children were Lucian's; she suspected Roxanne had bewitched him.
Lucian then persuaded Sonya to leave, citing exhaustion. After she left, he distanced himself from his children, telling them he was unwell and needed them to keep quiet and give him space. He asked Archie to care for his siblings.
"Mommy's sleeping because she took care of me last night. Please be quiet today," Lucian instructed.
The children nodded obediently.
"You must be uncomfortable too. Get some rest," Estella urged.
"Yes, let us know if you need anything," Archie and Benny added.
Lucian was indeed tired, overworked since Roxanne's poisoning. After informing the staff, he retired to his room. Roxanne was asleep, curled in a charmingly lazy position. Lucian covered her with a blanket before lying down.
He awoke to Roxanne taking his temperature. She looked exhausted.
"Why are you awake? You didn't sleep long," Lucian said.
Roxanne checked the thermometer, relieved to see his temperature was normal. She helped him sit up and gave him his medicine.
"A minor accident at the research institute," Roxanne explained, smiling. "Impurities were added to the rheumatism medication, strangely increasing its effectiveness. Old Mr. Lomax contacted me; he can't identify the new component. I'm using reverse engineering. If I find the key, we might have a new method for producing the medicine." Despite her words, the institute remained a concern; developing a new drug meant alleviating the suffering of more patients.
Lucian nodded, then remembered his mother's request. "My mom still doesn't believe it, soโ"
Roxanne interrupted casually, "So, a paternity test is needed? Fine. Let's do it."
