Chapter 1844: That Man From the North
It was late. The children slept soundly, but Roxanne was suffering from a severe stomachache, unable to straighten her back. Lucian massaged her, simultaneously urging her to take it easy at work.
โThis must be from my poor confinement years ago, haunting me now,โ Roxanne whined.
Lucian felt a pang of guilt. His emotions overwhelmed him as he blamed himself. With his warm, gentle touch, Roxanne's pain gradually subsided.
โItโs not that serious. It only hurts the first day. Iโll be fine tomorrow!โ she reassured him.
They discussed the car accident. โThe traffic police investigation, including surveillance footage from Linda and Madilyn, showed no one could have gotten near your car. Were the brakes worn?โ Lucian asked, looking at Roxanne expectantly, hoping she might recall something overlooked.
โBut the carโs brand new! Itโs absurd for the brakes to fail so soon. The police deduction canโt be wrong,โ he quickly dismissed the idea.
Then, Roxanne remembered something. โI think I stopped to help an old lady cross the road last night. Only six or seven minutes, I think.โ She couldnโt recall anything else unusual.
Lucianโs eyes lit up. โReally? Which junction? Can you remember?โ
Roxanne described the location. Lucian immediately called Cayden, instructing him to have the police reinvestigate that junction.
Half an hour later, his hope vanished. The surveillance cameras at that junction had been malfunctioning the previous night. He felt heavy-hearted. Those six to seven minutes had provided the perpetrator with an opportunity to tamper with the brakesโand they knew the cameras were out of order. A meticulous plan.
โCould it be Shawn?โ Lucianโs face hardened. โItโs time I met that man from the north!โ
Meanwhile, Sonya was recovering at the Farwell residence. Sheโd just taken her medicine and was preparing for bed when a car arrivedโElektra. She rushed in, clearly worried.
โMrs. Farwell! My parents said you were in an accident. How are you? Are you alright?โ Her anxious gaze was sincere. She examined Sonya carefully.
โIโm fine, really. Itโs late, Elektra. Why come all this way? You could have called,โ Sonya smiled.
โIโm glad youโre okay! I was terrified. What happened?โ Elektra pressed, her facade seemingly effortless.
After Sonya recounted the accident, she added, โLuckily, it was me. If it had been Roxanne, she would have been severely injured, driving as fast as she does.โ
Elektraโs expression subtly changed; her eyes grew cold, though she quickly masked it.
She must have decided to change, huh? Good thing I wasnโt swayed! Elektra thought, secretly gnashing her teeth. Outwardly, she forced a bright smile. โSuch a coincidence, Mrs. Farwell! You saved Ms. Jarvis. Lady Luck smiles on her!โ
Why is she talking like that? Somethingโs off, Sonya thought, but dismissed her doubts, maintaining a pleasant demeanor. โThank you for your concern, Elektra. Itโs late. I need to rest. You should go home and tell your parents Iโm fine.โ
