Chapter 1928: You Did Nothing Wrong
Late one night, Elias and Sonya realized the young couple hadn't returned. They called to check on them.
Lucian briefly explained the Lanns' situation, telling his parents they were likely staying overnight. Much had transpired, and he dissuaded Elias from visiting, suggesting it was best for Elias to stay home and care for the children. Only then, Lucian felt, would Roxanne and he be at ease.
Despite the late hour, nearing midnight, Yennefer was still awake. Noticing her fatigue, Jones urged her to rest.
โLucian and Roxanne, you two should rest too. I'll definitely help with the wedding. I can't believe Sonya didn't tell me anything, considering my experience in these matters!โ
After this, Yennefer excused herself. Apart from occasional cognitive distortions, she had largely recovered.
Jones remained in the living room, a sad expression on his face. After a long silence, he forced a smile, comforting Roxanne and Lucian. โItโs alright. If thereโs nothing else we can do, weโll treat her as a patient and seek professional psychiatric help.โ He was prepared for the worst.
โMr. Lann,โ Roxanne suggested, a new idea striking her, โwhy not try this?โ
โTry what?โ Lucian asked, puzzled.
Roxanne explained her idea: James, being a psychologist, could participate in the treatment. However, James carried a burden, believing his presence would worsen his mother's condition. Yet, Yennefer's current episode stemmed from the Alendor shooting; nothing indicated James' presence was the cause.
โI understand that,โ Jones admitted, his eyes darkening slightly, โbut Iโm not sure James canโฆโ
Lucian interjected, โIโll convince him! Mr. Lann, you know James still harbors unrest. He may have suppressed it, but he must overcome it.โ
Roxanne added, reassuringly, โMr. Lann, donโt worry. Iโm here to help. I can prevent Yennefer from having a seizure with my medical skills if needed. And we should stop the sedatives; long-term use will harm her endocrine system and mental state.โ
Jones finally nodded. The couple drove to inform James.
โJames, this is something you and Mrs. Lann must overcome,โ Lucian emphasized.
James hesitated, struggling to decide until Jones arrived, smiling and patting James' shoulder.
โJames, I believe in you. Letโs try! Even if it fails, weโll face it together as a family. Over the years, I understood your feelings, and thatโs why I didnโt interfere. Ultimately, I am greatly indebted to you. You did nothing wrong back then.โ
Jones' words stunned James, igniting a faint light in his eyes. For years, he had longed for his mother's recovery, blaming himself for his inability to prevent his aunt's death. The incident had tormented him.
โDad, youโre right! Weโll face this as a family!โ James finally decided.
