"How are you feeling, Mommy? Are you still feverish?" Archie and Benny ran to the bed, their worry evident.
Roxanne chuckled, shaking her head. "No, I feel much better."
The boys remained unconvinced. They reached out to check her forehead.
Roxanne bent down, letting them touch her. She then noticed Estella, a small figure standing behind them, tears in her eyes, biting her lip, her concern palpable. She was much more timid than her brothers.
Roxanne's heart melted. Smiling at Estella, she asked, "Essie, do you want to check if I'm okay?"
Estella hesitated, then nodded vigorously, releasing Lysa's hand and rushing to Roxanne. Roxanne bent down, letting Estella touch her forehead. Estella quickly withdrew her hand, then smiled.
"You were all scared, weren't you? I'm sorry for worrying you," Roxanne said, patting them lovingly. She remembered their panic when she was rushed to the hospital yesterday.
Benny nodded vehemently. "Archie and I will be good from now on. Mommy, please don't overwork yourself."
Archie, though sullen, clearly agreed.
Roxanne chuckled. "Sure, I'll take care of myself."
Lysa placed a thermal lunch box on the bedside table. "Have you had breakfast? I brought some. Eat while it's hot." She served them soup and side dishes.
Roxanne nodded. "Thank you so much."
Lucian, though lacking an appetite, couldn't refuse Lysa's kindness. They reached for their bowls simultaneously, their fingers brushing.
Roxanne froze, meeting Lucian's gaze. Her heart pounded before she quickly composed herself, picking up her bowl.
Lysa broke the silence. "Mr. Farwell, thank you for staying last night to care for Ms. Jarvis."
"I was happy to," Lucian replied, nodding. He glanced at Roxanne. "Estella loves her so much, and she's been wonderful to her. I felt I should reciprocate." He tried again to justify his presence as being solely for Estella. Roxanne showed no reaction, having heard similar words the previous night. Lysa, however, seemed surprised. Their interaction last night had suggested progress
Suspecting a misinterpretation, Lysa replied wryly, "Oh, I see"
Learning Lucian had stayed all night, Archie, after a thoughtful pause and a formal bow to Lucian, said, "Thank you, Mr. Farwell, for taking care of my mommy." He shared his mother's reservations about Lucian but acknowledged his help.
Benny similarly bowed courteously.
Lucian's brow furrowed at their distant demeanor. He simply nodded.
