Chapter 1938: Accident
The next day, Madilyn felt uneasy in her office. She inexplicably checked incoming flights to Horington, noting one arriving at two o'clock. When doctors consulted her about hospital bed shortages, they found her distracted. Mechanically, she replied, "We'll add another building to the inpatient department. Please assign beds according to illness severity. If necessary, add beds to the corridor, but obtain family permission first."
Her mind grew increasingly chaotic, forcing her to call Roxanne. "What does it mean to like someone, Roxanne? Jonathan's picking Coralie up from the airport, and I feel awful. I don't understand why I feel this way."
Roxanne sighed internally as Madilyn's distress poured forth. She suspected Madilyn harbored feelings for Jonathan and admitted to feeling oddly resentful about him picking up Coralie. She consoled Madilyn, "Knowing Jonathan, I bet he's just helping a friend. Don't worry too much, but you should tell him how you feel."
"How? Should I tell him I don't like him picking up another woman? I can't say that!" Madilyn frowned.
"Just say it. See how he reacts. You haven't told him how you feel, and he's rather dense. Should I ask Lucian to subtly nudge him?" Roxanne suggested.
"Forget it," Madilyn immediately rejected. "Maybe he doesn't see me that way; maybe he only sees me as a friend."
Roxanne wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. Her own emotions fluctuated. Ultimately, she comforted her friend, urging her not to overthink.
After the call, Madilyn calmed down. She resolved to focus on work, inspired by Roxanne's ability to balance career and family. After two meetings, she returned to her office, intending to leave after tidying her files and then joining her mother for Chanaean dinner.
Then, Jonathan called. Hoping he'd left Coralie at the airport, she answered gleefully.
Before she could speak, Jonathan's urgent voice cut through, "There's been an accident, Madilyn. A truck hit me. I'm near your hospital; I've called an ambulance."
Madilyn's hair stood on end. "Are you okay? I'll prepare for emergency treatment immediately!"
"I'm fine. But Coralie fainted. She hit her head and is bleeding. I'm applying pressure. I called her name, but she's not responding. Is she in danger?"
Dismissing her own anxieties, Madilyn focused on the situation. "First, check her pupils for light response and her breathing. If she's breathing and her pupils aren't dilated, it's likely a concussion, a temporary coma. Don't worry too much if that's the case. But check her breathing first. If she isn't breathing, perform CPR. I'm calling the emergency room now. Talk to you later!"
Hanging up, she alerted the emergency room to prepare for a patient's arrival.
