Chapter 1939: Does Not Feel Good
When the pale Coralie arrived at the hospital, she remained unconscious. Jonathan hurried her from the ambulance, laid her on a stretcher, and pushed her into the emergency room. Anxiety etched his face; his white shirt was bloodstained. He followed the emergency doctor, quickly explaining the accident. โI think she was hit at least twice, Doctor. She hit her head on the dashboard and then her shoulder. She had her seatbelts on, but I don't know if her spine was affected.โ
The doctor nodded. โWe're aware of the situation, Mr. Queen. You brought her here just in time. We'll start the emergency operation immediately. Don't worry about her. And you're injured as well; see another doctor about those wounds!โ He closed the emergency room door.
Jonathan felt lost. Then, sensing someone, he turned and saw Madilyn. Her heart ached as she quickly assessed him. โJonathan, you need to pay attention to your body. Are you feeling any severe pain?โ
She explained that adrenaline can mask pain during a crisis, delaying treatment. Jonathan obediently moved his limbs, then shook his head. โI'm fine, Madilyn. I had my seatbelt on and anticipated the crash, protecting my head and body. But Coralieโฆ I couldn't warn her in time. It's all my fault!โ
Madilyn sensed his guilt. โYou couldn't have reacted faster. Don't blame yourself.โ
He gazed anxiously at the emergency room, his concern for Coralie evident. A strange emotion stirred in Madilyn's heart, quickly suppressed. โYou may feel fine, but I suggest a CT scan, Jonathan. Now.โ Worried heโd refuse, she added, โI'll monitor Coralie's condition and update you immediately. All right?โ
โOkay! Thank you!โ
Madilyn quickly arranged for a nurse to take him for the scan while she waited outside the emergency room. About twenty minutes later, the emergency doctor emerged. โThe patient is awake, Director. I believe itโs only a concussion; she should be fine. We're still scanning for blood clots.โ
Madilyn nodded. โThank you. Please give your full attention to the surgery.โ
The doctor returned to his work. Soon, Jonathan reappeared, his examination complete, though the report wasn't yet ready. Madilyn relayed Coralie's condition. His anxious expression eased.
โIt's my fault,โ Jonathan muttered, more to himself than Madilyn. โI took a shortcut around a traffic jam near the airport. I didnโt expect so many trucks, many ignoring the rules. It's my fault Coralie was hurt!โ
Madilyn felt a pang of sympathy. Why was he berating himself? It was an accident. No one would ever wish for such a thing.
