Chapter 1947: Far Too Many Mistakes

The days following the wedding were uneventful and pleasant. Peregrine had trained a cadre of capable protรฉgรฉs at the research institute, and with Lindaโ€™s efficient management, Roxanneโ€™s workload steadily decreased. The three children pursued their studies diligently, their enthusiasm undiminished. Elias and Sonya took them out on weekends, easing Roxanneโ€™s mind considerably. Her husband accompanied her daily, their time spent shopping, dining, or enjoying local attractions; their private moments remained deeply romantic. Roxanne felt overwhelmingly content, her spirits soaring, a constant, unbidden smile gracing her lips.

That day, returning home after a shopping trip, she received a phone call from Lucian. He had prepared coffee and awaited her arrival. After coffee, and before collecting the children from school, they planned a family spa visit.

Arriving at the manor gates, she noticed a familiar figureโ€”her father, Grant. He stood looking around, carrying something. A familiar ache stirred within her.

She pulled her car alongside him, exited, and he, too, saw her. Though he avoided her gaze, he approached, carrying his burden.

โ€œRoxanne, I just wanted to see the children. I brought them some snacks and toys. If you donโ€™t need them, Iโ€™ll take them back.โ€ His voice and demeanor conveyed a profound sense of inferiority, making Roxanne uneasy. She recalled her fatherโ€™s usual fierce, yet cowardly, presenceโ€”a booming voice accompanying a perpetually grumpy expression.

Nevertheless, she accepted the toys and snacks. Though her children had little need for them, and Lucian would likely disapprove of the extra snacks, she took them; her father's demeanor seemed pitiable.

โ€œTheyโ€™re still at school. Iโ€™ll give them to them and let them know you were here. Anything else?โ€ Roxanneโ€™s tone was flat, almost impersonal. She wondered if his pitiful act was a ploy for sympathy. He probably only thinks about money, she mused.

โ€œIs that so? All right. Iโ€™ll come back another time. Iโ€™m truly sorry, Roxanne. Iโ€™ve made far too many mistakes!โ€ Grantโ€™s voice choked.

Roxanne looked up, startled to see his eyes reddening, his sorrowful expression hinting at deep regret. Still, she remained unconvinced. โ€œIโ€ฆ I canโ€™t concern myself with those matters. You should take better care of yourself,โ€ she replied indifferently.

Grantโ€™s sadness deepened as he noticed she hadnโ€™t called him โ€œDad.โ€ โ€œI understand. This is my retribution. Roxanne, I didnโ€™t come to beg for your sympathy. I deserve this. I just wanted to see the children. Perhapsโ€ฆ someday I wonโ€™t be able to hold on any longer. Thereโ€™s something elseโ€ฆ Winnie and Iโ€ฆ weโ€™re divorced!โ€

He produced a crumpled document from his pocket: a divorce certificate.
