Listen to this chapter:

That afternoon, Aubree noticed her employees staring at her strangely. One, a close colleague, teased, โ€œMs. Pearson, Mr. Farwell is so nice to youโ€”weโ€™re all green with envy!โ€

Aubree was stunned. She forced a casual smile and asked, โ€œReally? How did you know?โ€

The employeeโ€™s smile widened. โ€œEveryone knows Mr. Farwell cared for you at the hospital all night. Yet you came to work on time! Youโ€™re our role model!โ€

Aubree stiffened. โ€œWhat are you talking about? Lucian took care of me at the hospital? Iโ€™ve been fine; I havenโ€™t been to the hospital.โ€

The employee, thinking Aubree was embarrassed, showed her a news report. โ€œDonโ€™t be shy. Itโ€™s all over the news.โ€ Then, remembering her employerโ€™s health, she sheepishly asked, โ€œWhat happened last night? You were fine this afternoon. Why the hospital?โ€

Aubree glanced at the phone. The headline read: โ€œMr. Farwell Accompanied His Fiancรฉe to the Hospital and Cared for Her All Night.โ€ Her puzzlement grew. To the employeeโ€™s question, she lied, โ€œOh, I must have eaten something bad. Iโ€™m fine now. Go back to work.โ€

The employee offered more platitudes before returning to her desk.

Aubree returned to her office, grim-faced. She logged onto Twitter and searched for Lucian. A news report immediately appeared: โ€œMr. Farwell Accompanies Fiancรฉe to Hospital, Proving Intimate Relationship.โ€ Similar headlines followed.

She clicked the first link; the comments exceeded a million. The most popular came from a prominent entertainment page: โ€œLast night, Mr. Farwell drove his fiancรฉe to the hospital and carried her. What an attentive boyfriend! At 8:00 a.m., they left with his daughter. His fiancรฉe is close to the girlโ€”wedding bells are near!โ€ Two photos were attached.

The first showed Lucian carrying a woman toward the hospital at night. The second showed him by the car as the woman, holding a child, got in. The woman was clearly the same in both photos, and they looked very closeโ€”almost like a family.

But Aubree knew nothing about this. Lucian had been avoiding her, and the woman wasnโ€™t her.

She zoomed in on the photos. A familiar face slowly emerged. โ€œArgh! Itโ€™s that b*tch, Roxanne, again!โ€ The womanโ€™s profile and figure matched Roxanne perfectly.

Aubreeโ€™s expression darkened. Lucianโ€™s โ€œattentivenessโ€ was a complete misunderstanding! He hadnโ€™t cared for her; heโ€™d cared for Roxanne.
