Chapter 1975: Fastest Way to Acquire the Cure
Dressed in her finest attire, Christina offered a cold smirk. Observing Coralie's impatience, she comforted, "Perhaps they couldn't manage it, which is why they contacted the Centers for Disease Control so swiftly. But that doesn't mean they'll succeed!"
Coralie paced, her frustration evident. "We can't afford delays, Christina. The stakes are too high. We need that cure, and we need it now."
Christina's smirk widened. "Relax, Coralie. They may have the CDC, but we have our own resources. I've already initiated plans to acquire the necessary components for the cure."
Coralie stopped pacing, facing Christina. "What do you mean? What have you done?"
Christina's eyes glinted with arrogance and confidence. "I've contacted a black-market supplier specializing in rare pharmaceuticals. They'll provide what we need, no questions asked."
Coralie's expression softened slightly. "Are you sure we can trust them?"
Christina shrugged. "Trust is a luxury we can't afford. We need results, and they're our best option. Besides, I've made it clear that failure is unacceptable."
Coralie nodded slowly, her anxiety easing. "Alright. But we must remain vigilant. Any misstep could cost us everything."
Christina nodded. "Don't worry. I've got this. By the end of the week, we'll have the cure."
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Madilyn, Roxanne, and Lucian worked tirelessly to combat the crisis. Unaware of Christina's actions, they knew time was critical.
Roxanne looked up from her computer, frowning. "The CDC promised assistance, but they're facing delays due to bureaucracy. We're on our own for now."
Madilyn sighed. "We can't wait. We must press forward with our research and find a way to counteract this bacterium ourselves."
Lucian agreed. "I've contacted international colleagues. They might offer insights and experimental treatments we can test."
As they discussed their next steps, a nurse entered with a message. "Dr. Madilyn, you have a call. It's from an anonymous source claiming to have information about the bacterium."
Madilyn exchanged a puzzled look with Roxanne and Lucian. "I'll take it in my office," she said, heading towards the phone.
Alone, she answered. "This is Dr. Madilyn. Who am I speaking to?"
The voice was low and gravelly. "That's irrelevant. I have information to help you stop this bacterium. But it will come at a price."
Madilyn's heart pounded. "What kind of price?"
The voice chuckled darkly. "Nothing you can't manage. Let's just say it requires creativity and discretion."
Madilyn's mind raced. "Why should I trust you?"
"Because," the voice replied, "I have no interest in this bacterium spreading. Our interests align, for now."
Madilyn breathed deeply. "What do you want in return?"
"Nothing harmful to you or your patients. Just a favor, to be named later."
Madilyn hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. What do you need me to do?"
The voice gave instructions and a location to obtain necessary materials. "Remember, discretion is paramount. No one must know."
As the call ended, Madilyn felt uneasy. She knew she was taking a risk, but the urgency left her little choice. She returned to Roxanne and Lucian, her expression determined.
"We have a lead," she said, explaining the call. "It's risky, but it might be our best chance."
Roxanne frowned. "Are you sure, Madilyn? It sounds dangerous."
Madilyn nodded. "I know. But we must take every chance. Lives are at stake."
Lucian placed a hand on her shoulder. "We'll support you. Let's do this together."
With their plan in place, Madilyn followed the instructions. She felt watched but focused on the task.
Back at the hospital, Roxanne and Lucian continued their work, unaware of Madilyn's dangerous game. They trusted her judgment.
As the week progressed, Madilyn's efforts bore fruit, and significant research progress was made. The breakthrough arrived just as a patient's condition worsened critically.
With new information and resources, Roxanne and Lucian administered the experimental treatment. Tension filled the air as they monitored the patient's response.
Hours later, the patient's condition stabilized. It was a small victory, offering hope.
Celebrating their progress, Madilyn received another call. "You did well, Dr. Madilyn. But remember, I will call on you for that favor one day."
Madilyn's heart sank, but she remained calm. "I understand. Thank you for your help."
The line went dead, leaving Madilyn with foreboding. She knew her actions had consequences, but focused on the positive outcome. They'd made a breakthrough, closer to defeating the bacterium.
Rejoining Roxanne and Lucian, she felt renewed purpose. Together, they would face challenges and ensure justice. The battle was far from over, but with their combined strength and determination, they were ready to fight.
