Chapter 2017: He Is Getting Old
Just before reaching the Sheffield family mansion, Jonathan ordered the Mercedes-Benz vehicles to halt and instructed over a dozen bodyguards to await his command. If unable to contact him by phone within an hour, they were to enter the mansion.
The bodyguards complied, dispersing their vehicles two to three hundred meters around the property. Jonathan then returned to his car. Noticing Madilyn's nervousness, he took her hand.
“Don’t worry,” he said, his eyes resolute. “I’ll definitely take Mrs. Xander away today.” His assurance eased Madilyn's anxiety.
The mansion gates stood wide open, a welcoming sight. The Rolls-Royce swiftly entered.
Meanwhile, inside, Mildred spotted the Rolls-Royce. “Mr. Wilmer arrives so quickly,” she murmured. “He seems eager to meet Madilyn. And a new Rolls-Royce, no less! The Cheever family certainly has wealth.”
Norton nodded, rising to greet Wilmer with a smile.
However, when the car door opened, Madilyn stepped out.
The smiles on Norton and Mildred’s faces froze. They barely recognized her. The woman before them was not the girl they had dismissed over a decade ago. Her attire, flawless complexion, and subtle aura were a stark contrast to their memories.
Mildred was especially stunned. Envy flared in her eyes. How could Lorraine’s daughter undergo such a transformation? She was a true ugly duckling turned swan.
Norton, initially concerned about Madilyn’s suitability for Wilmer and planning a makeover, realized it was entirely unnecessary.
“Madilyn?” he called softly.
Madilyn assessed him. He was a stranger; she’d only met him briefly twice over a decade ago, witnessing him speak cruelly to her mother. Seeing his white hair, she felt not sadness, but a strange satisfaction. He was aging, too, losing the youthful charm that had captivated her mother.
Fury flashed in her eyes as she leveled an icy gaze upon him. Then, her attention shifted to Mildred, and her anger intensified. She glared, remembering the bullying—the ruined books, clothes, and snacks.
“Mildred, it was your idea, wasn’t it? To forcibly take my mother away to pressure me into this blind date?” Madilyn said through gritted teeth, advancing on Mildred.
Startled, Mildred turned to Norton. “Norton, look at your daughter! She looks like she wants to kill me!”
“Madilyn, what are you doing?” Norton shouted, stepping between Madilyn and Mildred.
Madilyn stopped, sneering. “Rest assured, I haven’t time for revenge. I’m here to take my mother away. It’s best we have nothing further to do with your family.”
Above all, Madilyn wanted to see her mother and ensure her well-being.
