Chapter 2018: Rented a Boyfriend
โLetโs talk inside,โ Madilyn suggested. โIโm so glad youโre back.โ
Norton knew how Mildred had bullied Lorraine and Madilyn. However, his business had just boomed, leaving him little time for family matters. He couldn't reason with Mildred, so he only checked on Lorraine. He offered compensation, but she refused, criticizing his past betrayal and neglect of Madilyn. Initially remorseful, his guilt faded with time. He couldn't sacrifice his business empire, reputation, or social standing. Relationships, however, were inconsequential.
โQuit acting, Norton Sheffield,โ Madilyn said coldly, her eyes fixed on him. โI wonโt agree to your terms, nor will I abide by your arrangements. I only want my mother. Bring her out now, or elseโฆโ If looks could kill, Norton would be dead. I canโt believe shameless men like him exist! she thought. He dumped Mom and me, ignored us for over a decade, and now wants to marry me off for his own benefit! Itโs an embarrassment to be related to him!
โOr else what?โ Mildred interrupted, her anger erupting. โLetโs be clear, Madilyn. This is Xandenia, not Horington.โ
Mildred, despite Madilynโs earlier intimidation, remembered her own bullying and felt no fear. So what if Madilynโs driving a Rolls-Royce? she thought. No matter how rich she gets, she canโt change who she is. Waitโฆ could the car be rented? Someone might have suggested this bluff! That car looks familiarโฆ it belongs to the Kaiser Hotelโs general manager!
Confirming her suspicions with the registration plate, Mildred smirked. โHaha! Shame on you, Madilyn Xander! You rented this car, didnโt you? And hired a driver? How much is the daily rate? My, myโฆ to think youโd go to such lengths to impress.โ
Madilyn was speechless. I canโt believe Mildredโs focused on the car, she thought. But itโs not surprising; she always judges people by appearances and possessions. A snob, through and through.
Nortonโs gaze darkened. โWhatโs the deal with this car? Is it really a rental?โ
Madilyn shook her head and chuckled. โBirds of a feather flock together! Norton, Mildred, does this mean youโll only respect me if this Rolls-Royce is mine? Otherwise, Iโm a pushover?โ
A sneer crossed Mildredโs face. โOf course! If you fake being rich, donโt blame me for calling you out!โ
A slow clap echoed from the Rolls-Royce. Clap! Clap! Clap!
Jonathan emerged, grinning. โBy the way, Mr. and Mrs. Sheffield, Madilyn didnโt just rent the Rolls-Royce. She rented a boyfriend, too!โ
