Chapter 2030: Self-Numbing

Upon opening the door, Jonathan smiled. "Did Madam Xander kick you out again?"

"Yeah," Madilyn replied, walking in with her pillows. "She snores too loudly, and I can never get used to it."

She noticed his laptop was still on, a sign he was still working. A wave of sympathy washed over her; he must be exhausted. He'd planned their travel itinerary that morning, meticulously researching good food and fun activities, and still worked late into the night.

Entering the room, she saw it was impeccably clean and tidy, unlike a lived-in space. A glance at the refrigerator confirmed her impression; the drinks were neatly arranged. Isn't this obsessive-compulsive behavior? she thought. She knew this meticulousness was a form of self-torment.

She subtly rearranged the bottles, then chose an unfamiliar fruit wine, watching Jonathan for his reaction. Individuals with severe OCD often became agitated by such disruptions. But Jonathan simply smiled, seeming relieved.

"Jonathan," she said, "I'm your girlfriend, but I'm also a doctor. I have to advise you to stop working so hard. I can help with the itinerary. Please try to relax, okay?" Sheโ€™d given him enough hints without directly mentioning his disorder. She worried that a relapse of his previous depression, caused by excessive stress, was imminent if he continued this pattern.

With a serious expression, Jonathan replied, "I know, Maddy. I understand your concern. And I also know you're the only one who could heal me."

Her face flushed; her heart raced. A simple comment felt intensely intimate. She avoided his gaze, fearing she'd be captivated by his dark eyes and overwhelmed by impulse.

She opened the wine, poured two glasses, and handed one to Jonathan. "Sometimes, a little wine helps relax the mind. Don't push yourself so hard." She wanted wine to sleep better; otherwise, the sound of his shower would ignite her imagination.

"You're right. Let's drink together," Jonathan said, raising his glass. His smile was even more captivating. She averted her gaze, wondering if he was teasing her.

After a gentle clink, they sipped their wine and chatted easilyโ€”about sights they'd seen, work, and shared anecdotes. She felt a profound sense of peace.

They finished the bottle, and Madilyn fetched another. "This wine is sweet and delicious," she commented, unaware of its high alcohol content. For now, the effects were imperceptible.
