“What do you mean by that, Roxanne?” Orchid scowled, startled by Lucian’s sudden presence. His imposing demeanor commanded attention; even Orchid, accustomed to high-profile events, found herself captivated by his elegance. Seeing him standing so close to Roxanne filled her with disbelief.
“He’s my husband, Lucian Farwell,” Roxanne replied simply.
Shock registered on Orchid’s face. The rumors from Dartan were true; Roxanne had remarried her ex-husband, and he was even more impressive than she’d heard. Envy, as usual, consumed her. Roxanne consistently exceeded expectations—surpassing Orchid in medical skill, research, and even securing a remarkably desirable husband.
“Greetings, Mr. Farwell! I’m Roxanne’s senior, Orchid Downey,” Orchid said, extending a hand. Lucian’s cold, reluctant nod made his displeasure clear.
Awkwardness flickered across Orchid’s face before she turned to Roxanne. “What’s going on here? You have some explaining to do.” It was unheard of for a chief to defy company orders, regardless of the company involved.
Sensing Orchid’s attempt to corner her, Roxanne responded calmly, “I apologize, but you didn’t inform me of your visit. The research institute staff weren’t at fault for not recognizing you, and a sudden investigation would have caused unnecessary disruption.”
A gloomy expression settled on Orchid’s face. Roxanne’s defiance was unexpected.
“The company and our mentor sent me to conduct this surprise investigation,” Orchid stated confidently. “You weren’t notified, and my team will be heading the research institute from now on. Mr. Lambert has always been your weakness; you should obey me.”
But she miscalculated. Roxanne, meeting Lucian’s encouraging gaze, replied, “I’m sorry, Orchid, but I can’t comply. Many details remain unresolved. I won’t hand over the institute until they are addressed.”
Disbelief etched itself onto Orchid’s face.
“Are you defying Mr. Lambert’s orders?” she demanded, gritting her teeth.
Roxanne’s reply was firm. “Perhaps. We should discuss this further. If we can find a solution that satisfies both parties, I’ll cooperate.”
