Chapter 2049: The Culprit

They waited for Grant to wake, hoping to uncover the truth. Overwhelmed by resentment and grief, Roxanne was inconsolable. While waiting, she noticed her mother's radiant smile in the wedding photograph hanging on Grant's wall, prompting a fresh wave of tears.

Lucian entered with food. As Roxanne ate little, he gently wiped away her tears and offered water without urging her to finish. Fixing her gaze on Grant, she silently cursed him in her heart. If Mom was poisoned by that homewrecker, you're no better than a murderer! You brought her back, and you will pay for her death!

The police arrived, reviewing surveillance footage, taking statements from the housekeepers, and drawing a blood sample from Grant. They promised to arrest Winnie once the lab results were available.

Around eight o'clock, Roxanne gave Grant another acupuncture treatment. The oral medication began to take effect, and he finally awoke after the poison was neutralized. He stared blankly at the ceiling, silent and motionless.

The housekeepers rushed to inform Roxanne and Lucian. Roxanne immediately went to her father's bedside, asking anxiously, โ€œTell me, how did Mom die? Did Winnie poison her? That's what happened, right?โ€

Grant remained unresponsive, his expression blank and eyes empty. Lucian entered and, noticing Grant's stillness, coldly approached him, raising his fist as if to strike. He stopped just short of contact, intending only to gauge whether Grant was feigning unconsciousness. Grant blinked, regaining his senses.

Roxanne, unable to contain her fury, yelled, grabbing his collar, โ€œTell me the truth! Please!โ€

A sorrowful expression washed over Grant's face; his eyes reddened. โ€œYes, it was Winnie. Days ago, I found your mother's medical records. They showed excessive heavy metalsโ€”poisoning. Iโ€ฆ I didn't expect Winnie to be so vicious!โ€

He paused. โ€œI called Winnie, lying about finding an item your mother left behind. When she arrived, I confronted her. She denied it at first, but after repeated questioning and threats to call the police, she confessed and begged me to let her go. Enraged, I wanted a confession on my phone. In a fit of fury, she hit meโ€ฆโ€ His voice trailed off, lapsing back into a daze.

Even prepared, Roxanne felt rage building. Lucian narrowed his eyes, asking, โ€œDid Winnie poison you, too?โ€

Grant burst into tears. โ€œIโ€™m sorry! I let your mother down. I caused her death! I took the poison myself. I wanted to die. Someone like me doesn't deserve to liveโ€ฆโ€
