Chapter 2055: Dead
Roxanne returned to the manor, utterly exhausted. Lucian brought her a glass of warm water, followed by a bowl of mushroom soup.
โDarling, stay calm,โ he said. โWeโll figure out how to gather sufficient evidence together. Perhaps we can get some clues from Grant. Weโll talk to him again tomorrow to jog his memory.โ
Lucian remained composed. They could confirm his mother-in-law's death was premeditated murder by poisoning, but they needed sufficient witnesses and physical evidence.
โHoney, we must file the case,โ Roxanne said. โIโve decided to exhume the body and perform an autopsy.โ
Tears streamed down Roxanneโs cheeks. Her mother had suffered so much in life, and now her peace was disrupted even in death, all because of Grant. She remembered her parents constantly arguing before Winnie, the mistress, entered their lives. Grant would lose his temper and criticize her mother relentlessly. Now, she realized heโd been trying to force a divorce, underestimating her mother's commitment to their family. Without other means to force a divorce, Winnie had resorted to malicious methods.
Lucian's face fell. He regretted not having the chance to properly care for his mother-in-law. From that day forward, regardless of the cost, he was determined to bring Winnie to justice.
The couple fell silent. Upstairs, Elias and Sonya noticed their return and came down to check on them, intending to remind them to go to bed early due to the cold weather. Sensing their distress, they quickly inquired about what was happening.
Elias and Sonya were stunned by Lucianโs account of their daughter-in-lawโs motherโs tragic fate. Seconds later, Sonya exploded. โLucian, we must not let Winnie get away with this! That woman is terrifying!โ
Elias, usually composed and rational, grimaced. โLucian, tomorrow Iโll contact a police officer friend of mine; he may have experience with this.โ
Lucian and Roxanne nodded firmly. Roxanne felt a surge of strength, buoyed by her familyโs support.
The elders comforted Roxanne, offering to care for the children so she could focus on the matter at hand, urging her to discuss any problems with the family. Reassured, Roxanne pulled herself together, nodded, and urged them to go to bed.
โLetโs take a hot shower,โ Lucian said, taking her hand. They slowly started upstairs.
Then, Roxanneโs phone rang. It was the housekeeper from the Jarvis residence. She frowned. What now?
Answering, she heard the housekeeperโs panicked voice. โMrs. Farwell, something terrible happened! Mr. Jarvisโฆ he took his own life!โ
Roxanneโs face froze. Lucianโs eyebrows arched in astonishment. They had anticipated Grantโs death eventually, but not at this critical juncture.
โGrant, you heartless beast!โ Roxanne cried. โI saved your life today! I needed your testimony, and you take your own life? You coward! You scumbag! Do you intend to let my motherโs murder case go unpunished?โ
Another emotional breakdown ensued. Tears streamed down her face as she sobbed in Lucianโs arms. She wasnโt sad; only resentment and intensified hatred for Grant consumed her.
