Chapter 2056: The Universe Is Against Her

Lucian calmed the housekeeper and immediately called Cayden to prepare for handling the death at the Jarvis residence. Roxanne refused to return that night. With a father like that, she felt no need for a final visit.

Lucian spent the night comforting Roxanne; only around three or four in the morning did they finally feel sleepy. After she fell asleep, he continued to hold her gently. Their sleep was short-lived; many tasks remained.

When Elias and Sonya learned the news, they showed little sadness. Instead, they speculated on Grant's suicide: guilt toward his ex-wife, or a desire to protect his mistress?

"Mom, Dad, let's keep Grant's funeral simple and private," Roxanne told them. "We'll pay our respects today and have the service tomorrow."

"Okay," Elias agreed. "The children should skip school today. Let's all go and pay our respects; he was their grandfather, after all."

The family made simple arrangements according to Roxanne's wishes. The children showed a surprising understanding of their grandfather's death.

"Mommy, I think Granddad went to be with Granny," Estella comforted Roxanne. "Don't be too sad!"

Archie and Benny nodded in agreement. Roxanne hugged her children and kissed their cheeks. From that day forward, Roxanne considered herself solely a member of the Farwell family, leaving the Jarvis family behind.

That afternoon, a wake was held at the Jarvis residence. Roxanne and the children, accompanied by Lucian and his parents, attended to pay their respects and handle the funeral arrangements.

At a hospital, Winnie cared for Yosef, whose arms were encased in thick casts after a double fracture. His recovery would take at least two months. Yosef's expression was grim; he despised Roxanne intensely.

Suddenly, Winnie said, "Yosef, your father died last night!"

"What? Grant is dead?" Yosef's initial shock quickly faded into an expressionless mask. "Good. With a father like him, it makes little difference whether he's alive or dead."

Winnie remained unmoved.

"Mom, tell Yuliana," Yosef said, a cold smile playing on his lips. "Let her have something to celebrate."

Winnie paused, then nodded. "I'll tell her, but I doubt she cares. Since you two were children, Grant has only caused trouble. He was no father to either of you!"

She immediately called Yuliana, who reacted similarly to Yosef; Grant's death seemed inconsequential to her.

"He's dead? Good! Don't bother us with the funeral. Roxanne's rich now; she can give him a grand one. I never considered him my father."

Yuliana hung up without another word.

After a long silence, Winnie murmured, "Yosef, do you think Grant killed himself to protect me?"

Yosef frowned. "Why would you even think that? If he cared about you, he wouldn't have told Roxanne the truth before he died. He could have taken that secret to his grave. Mom, are you sure Roxanne won't retaliate?"

"I'm sure she can't. Grant's dead. It's like the universe is against her. Once you recover, we should sell the house and leave Harrington!"
