Chapter 2063: Something Is Fishy About This
At the police station, Bill doubled his coffee intake to stay awake, then had the officers return Winnie to her holding cell, halting the interrogation. He subsequently questioned the interrogating officers, but the results were disappointing. Winnie possessed remarkably strong mental fortitude; her expression remained impassive regardless of their techniques. Bill had observed her pupils throughout the interrogation, but to no avail.
โIโve seen this type of suspect before,โ Bill explained to the young officers. โTheyโve been doing this for years; their conscience and morals are numbed. They constantly self-hypnotize themselves with a clean memory to suppress the truth. Thatโs how they can appear so calmโthey genuinely donโt believe theyโve done anything wrong.โ
He added, โOf course, we canโt wrongly accuse anyone. If we donโt have new evidence by tomorrow, weโll have to release her.โ
Both officers nodded. One asked, โIf time is of the essence, why did we stop the interrogation?โ
Bill checked his watch. โItโs one in the morning. Letโs give her two hoursโ rest before another interrogation. Sheโll be more exhausted then, perhaps leading to a breakthrough.โ
The officers realized that if the suspect was on guard, the interrogation would be ineffective regardless of method. Bill had no intention of sleeping that night.
By dawn, Bill and the officers were yawning, but the interrogation record yielded no useful leads. Theyโd hoped to uncover flaws in Winnieโs story to find evidence, but their plan had failed.
โMr. Chapman,โ one officer said, โwhen itโs time to hand things over to the afternoon shift, we may have to release her.โ
Bill nodded. โWe have to follow the law.โ
This news was unwelcome. After hesitating, Bill called Lucian to update him. Lucian, just awake, discussed details Roxanne remembered from the previous night.
โHmm,โ Bill said, grasping a key point. โWhat was Ms. Jarvisโs mother doing when she was frequently out for extended periods? This is very suspicious!โ
Lucian had noted this the previous night, questioning Roxanne, but she knew nothing.
โMr. Farwell, have Ms. Jarvis try to recall more details. Iโll speak to the forensic team today to see if we can find other clues,โ Bill said, quickly hanging up before Lucian could thank him.
Meanwhile, Roxanne had dropped the children off at school and returned home. Seeing her husbandโs worried expression, she smiled softly. โI canโt be so panicked. Maybe if I calm down, I can remember more.โ
Lucian hugged her. Feeling safe in his embrace, Roxanne murmured, โIsnโt tomorrow Madilynโs wedding? Iโm not in a rush anymore. Winnie canโt disappear into thin air. Iโll help Madilyn celebrate her big day first.โ
