Chapter 232: Leaving the Country After Divorce
Meanwhile, at the Ocean Restaurant, Larry continued drinking with the senior members. When he noticed Roxanne hadn't returned after a long time, he grew worried.
Using the washroom as an excuse, he stepped outside and called Roxanne. She was just drifting off to sleep after much contemplation when her ringtone startled her awake. She opened her eyes, taking a moment to orient herself. Without checking the caller ID, she answered. "Hello? Who is this?"
Larry was taken aback by her question. "It's me," he replied. Hearing his voice, Roxanne snapped back to reality, realizing she'd forgotten something important.
"Where are you? Why aren't you back yet?" Larry asked anxiously, unaware of what had transpired. Only then did Roxanne remember the post-conference dinner. Earlier, she'd assumed she could return after buying Lucian coffee, so she'd left without informing her colleagues. Unexpectedly, she'd been taken back to the hotel afterward, and the dinner had completely slipped her mind.
Remembering this, Roxanne apologized. "I'm so sorry, Larry. I wasn't feeling well, so I left early. I forgot to tell you. Please apologize to them for me."
Larry breathed a sigh of relief. "I see. I thought something bad had happened. It's good to hear you're okay. Since you're not feeling well, get some rest. I'll explain to the others."
After a few more words, Larry hung up. Returning to the private room, everyone looked at him expectantly. "Where's Dr. Jarvis? You're back, but she's still not here."
Larry poured himself some wine, raising his glass. "Dr. Jarvis isn't feeling well, so she left early and asked me to apologize. Let me propose a toast to thank you all for your understanding." He downed his drink.
Gerald and the others reassured him, though expressing regret at missing more time with Roxanne. Her absence, however, prompted everyone to check the time. It was late, and many were already intoxicated. Gerald stood, announcing, "I think it's time to go. Let's get together again soon!"
Everyone said their goodbyes and departed. As the most junior member, Larry saw everyone off, leaving last. Exiting the restaurant, he hailed a taxi and returned to the hotel. Despite the late hour, he decided to check on Roxanne. I'm the one who brought her here, and I didn't even know she was sick, he thought uneasily. He knocked several times without a response. Remembering her drowsy voice on the phone, he figured she was asleep. He stopped knocking and returned to his room, next to hers. Having drunk heavily, he felt lightheaded. Opening his door, he heard another door closing and instinctively turned. A familiar figure briefly appeared, then the door to the room left of Roxanne's closed. It happened too quickly for Larry to see clearly. He quickly dismissed it from his mind.
Back in his room, he called reception for hangover medication, then washed up and went to bed, intending to check on Roxanne in the morning.
