Chapter 242: Leaving the Country After Divorce
An hour into her flight to Horington, Roxanne frowned upon seeing a familiar face boarding the plane: Lucian. She hadn't expected him to be on the same flight. They had purchased their tickets hastily; she remembered only three seats remaining after she and Larry had booked theirs. She hadn't realized Lucian had bought the last one.
Regret washed over her as he approached. She had planned to return alone, purchasing only her own ticket. Because she and Larry booked separately, they weren't seated together. Lucian's seatโthe last availableโwas beside hers. She hadn't considered changing seats, as she was already at the window. Now, he blocked her only escape route. Requesting a seat change would make her avoidance obvious.
Before she could hesitate further, he sat down. Her forehead furrowed, Roxanne resigned herself to her fate.
Lucian, before boarding, had wondered about Roxanne's seat. To his surprise, he found her next to him. Noticing her reluctance, he smirked and said, "As I said, I also bought a ticket. Unfortunately, you and Mr. Morrison didn't wait for me, Ms. Jarvis."
Roxanne ignored him, turning to gaze out the window. Since escape was impossible, she planned to treat him as a stranger. However, he had other plans.
"Ms. Jarvis," Lucian's voice was low and unfathomable, "I'm curious. Why the hasty departure? I didn't hear you mention returning to Horington at breakfast."
Scowling, Roxanne retorted, "Mr. Farwell, I'm curious why you left your fiancรฉe in Bellridge and returned to Horington alone."
Lucian's gaze darkened at the mention of his fiancรฉe. Roxanne, pretending not to notice, continued, "Mr. Farwell, you're getting married soon. You should be spending more time with your fiancรฉe."
Before Lucian could reply, Roxanne pulled out a blanket, covering herself up to her face. Turning her back to him, she lay down. Her muffled voice came through the blanket, "I'm tired. I need to rest. Mr. Farwell, please be quiet." She closed her eyes, leaving Lucian to stare at the back of her head.
He ceased his attempts at conversation, studying her. Considering the timing of her departure and her words, he suspected Aubree was the reason. However, he couldn't decipher Roxanne's view of his relationship with Aubree. If I'm just a stranger to Roxanne, why is she so hostile toward my rumored fiancรฉe?
Roxanne, pretending to sleep, was unaware of his thoughts. She intended to sleep through the flight to avoid him, but even with her back turned, she felt his intense gaze, preventing her from dozing off.
