Lucian frowned in frustration; the shovel was extremely unwieldy. While struggling, he felt Roxanne's gentle gaze and looked up. Their eyes met, but Roxanne quickly averted her gaze, adopting a neutral expression. Lucian frowned at her reaction, but his frustration vanished. He turned to a nearby staff member and said, "Excuse me, I'm having some difficulty with this. Could you show me how to use it?"
The staff member, who had been observing Lucian for some time, had wanted to correct his technique but hesitated, intimidated by Lucian's appearance. Seeing Lucian ask for help, however, the staff member quickly stepped forward to demonstrate. Lucian chuckled at the staff member's technique, realizing how awkward he'd looked.
Having learned the proper shovel technique, they significantly sped up the process of filling the holes. The five of them then worked together to plant the saplings. The three children chatted with Roxanne from time to time, while Lucian quietly observed.
"Are you guys a family?" the staff member asked curiously, observing their happy interaction.
Both Roxanne and Lucian froze. "Why do you ask?" Lucian asked, preventing Roxanne from responding. His question, however, inadvertently reinforced the staff member's assumption.
Roxanne frowned at this.
"Well, you all look very much like a family. And these three children resemble you two," the staff member replied casually.
Roxanne's displeasure shifted to uneasiness. She wanted to keep their secret, but Archie and Benny did resemble Lucian. The resemblance wasn't striking, however, as they were young, so Lucian hadn't noticed. She feared Lucian would pay closer attention to Archie and Benny, recognizing their true identities.
Lucian raised an eyebrow and studied the children. While they bore a slight resemblance, he didn't think much of it, assuming the children's similarity to their mother was simply a matter of genetics.
"You guys sure make a lovely family!" the staff member exclaimed, assuming Lucian's silence was agreement. Lucian didn't deny it.
Roxanne snapped out of her thoughts and said coldly, "I'm afraid you've misunderstood. We're not a family. We're just on the same team; the children are friends."
The staff member was shocked. "Is that so? My apologies for the assumption. You all seemed to get along so well"
"That's all right. I just wanted to clarify," Roxanne said with a forced smile.
The staff member nodded profusely.
Lucian watched Roxanne with a gloomy expression.
