Chapter 295: Take It Easy

Aubree had been depressed since Lucian had chased her away a few days earlier. At the Pearson residence, she usually found solace in Sonya's unwavering support, but this time, Sonya had been unable to help. Aubree despaired at Sonya's inaction.

She wasn't stupid. After years of waiting for Lucian, she knew deep down he didn't want to marry her. Yet, she'd clung to hope, believing Sonya would intervene. She'd always assumed that if she waited long enough, Lucian would eventually marry her.

However, her hopes were crushed when Roxanne returned and Lucian announced his intention to break off their engagement.

After a day to collect herself, Aubree decided to visit Sonya. Sonya was surprised to see her, but after a brief pause, she invited Aubree in, as she always did.

"I'm sorry for not letting you know beforehand. I hope I'm not disturbing you," Aubree said apologetically.

Sonya, feeling sympathy for Aubree after the engagement was called off, and genuinely fond of her, smiled warmly. "Don't worry about it. You're like a daughter to me; you can visit anytime. You don't need to be so formal. Just make yourself at home."

A rueful grin touched Aubree's lips. "You used to call me your 'daughter-in-law,' but not anymore."

Tears welled in Aubree's eyes. She paused to wipe them away, composing herself. "Mrs. Farwell, I came to apologize. I made many mistakes, and you all tolerated them because of my family's relationship with Lucian. Now that he wants nothing to do with me, I just hope things end well between us. I'm truly sorry for everything. I hope you can forgive me." Aubree employed her most appealing expression, playing the victim. "I did everything with the best intentions. I considered myself Lucian's wife, so my decisions were for the family. Sometimes my kindness was misunderstood, but I meant no harm. Even if we don't become family, I hope you can forgive me."

Sonya's heart ached to see Aubree so distraught. Over the years, she had treated Aubree as her future daughter-in-law. Despite Aubree's words, Sonya was actually quite pleased with her. Sonya herself had been shocked by Lucian's sudden decision, and Aubree's words brought back fond memories of her time with the family.

Sonya sat beside Aubree and put a hand on her shoulder. "Take it easy, Aubree. Things aren't set in stone yet."

Aubree smiled helplessly. "Mrs. Farwell, I know Lucian. Since he's made it clear he's not interested, there's no chance of reconciliation. It's okay. You can still visit me if you're lonely. You're like a mother to me."

Sonya was even more touched. She thought for a moment, then reassured Aubree, "Don't worry. No one knows about the broken engagement yet, so there's still room for discussion. I'll talk to Lucian once he's calmed down."

Although relieved, Aubree maintained a pitiful expression and nodded reluctantly.
