Chapter 296: She Bets He Doesn't Know
The pathetic look on Aubree's face vanished the moment she left the Farwell residence. A bitter, spiteful expression replaced it as she entered the car.
Noticing the change, Charles asked cautiously, "Where to, Ms. Pearson?"
Aubree glanced at him coldly through the rearview mirror. "The office."
Just as Charles was about to drive off, Aubree grumbled, "No, go home!"
She wasn't in the mood to face her irritating colleagues.
Aubree had gone to Sonya hoping she would immediately speak to Lucian, as she always did when Aubree was upset. However, her visit proved fruitless. Sonya said she would only discuss the matter with Lucian once he had calmed down.
That wasn't enough. By the time Lucian cooled off, news of the broken engagement would be public.
That couldn't happen.
Resentment burned in Aubree's heart.
Roxanne Jarvis! she thought. It's all your fault! Ever since you returned, Lucian and Essie only think about you! I don't care if Essie wants to stay with you, but you can't have Lucian too! I won't let him choose you!
Her current situation reminded her of six years ago. Then, Lucian had shunned Roxanne because of Aubree. But things had completely changed since Roxanne's return; their positions seemed reversed.
Damn it! Something must have happened in the past six years.
Just as Aubree was consumed by anger, Gina called. Aubree answered with a straight face.
"How did it go? Did you talk to Mrs. Farwell?" Gina asked.
Aubree's face fell. "Yes. I talked to her, but it didn't help. I'll take matters into my own hands!"
"Oh? What are you planning? It seems Lucian's determined to marry that woman. I don't think we can change that," Gina replied, surprised.
Aubree gritted her teeth. It was true. There was nothing she could do if he was determined. The Pearson Group was no match for Farwell Group; they were insignificant in comparison. She lacked the power to change his mind.
"Well, since Essie is the reason for the broken engagement, why not start with her?" Gina suggested.
Aubree's mother's suggestion sparked an idea.
"Aubree?" Gina waited for a response.
Aubree snapped back, "We'll talk later. Bye."
She hung up and turned to Charles. "Go to the office and have someone investigate Roxanne Jarvis. I want a detailed report on her activities over the past few years, and I want to know who fathered her two sons."
Gina's words reminded Aubree how little she knew about the boys; she didn't even know their father.
I bet Lucian doesn't know either, she thought. If I bring that man back from abroad, Roxanne won't have time for Lucian. And Lucian will be disgusted to learn she's already with someone else. Ha, Roxanne Jarvis! You're not getting Lucian if I can help it.
Seeing the malice contorting Aubree's face, Charles hastily said, "Understood."
