Chapter 300: Mommy Is Down with a Fever
When Roxanne arrived home, Madilyn had already brought Archie and Benny inside. The two boys were playing in the living room.
Seeing Roxanne drenched, they ran to her, worry etched on their faces. "Mommy! Did you walk in the rain?"
Roxanne was exhausted but patted their heads. "I forgot my umbrella and got wet running to the car. I'll be okay."
After asking Lysa to watch the children, Roxanne showered and changed clothes. She then played with the boys before going to bed.
Overexerted from the past two days, Roxanne felt completely drained. She fell asleep immediately, but a fever woke her in the middle of the night.
In a daze, she got out of bed to get water, but her legs gave way, and she fell back onto the mattress.
A frown creased her brow as she slowly regained consciousness. I think I'm running a fever
Since it was midnight, she didn't want to wake anyone. I'll just sleep it off. It'll get better tomorrow. She drifted back to sleep.
The next morning, Archie and Benny woke early, excited to go to school. Lysa and Madilyn had been taking them because Roxanne had been busy. The boys looked forward to Roxanne taking them, but she didn't appear after breakfast.
Almost late, they ran upstairs and knocked on her door, but got no answer.
They ran downstairs to Lysa. "Ms. Lane, Mommy isn't answering. Could you check on her?"
Frightened, Lysa hurried upstairs and unlocked the door. Archie and Benny rushed in to find Roxanne lying weakly in bed.
Her eyes were closed, her cheeks flushed, and her lips dry. She clearly had a high fever.
"Mommy!" the boys cried. When Roxanne didn't respond, Lysa went to her.
She touched Roxanne's forehead and her face fell. This is worse than last time. What should I do? She doesn't seem to be waking up, and we can't take her to the hospitalโฆ Lysa was frantic.
Archie glanced at the clock. "Ms. Lane, could you help Benny and me get a leave of absence? We'll take care of Mommy at home." Lysa immediately agreed, called Pippa, and then placed a cool, wet towel on Roxanne's forehead.
The boys stayed by their mother's side until she finally awoke.
Roxanne felt as if she'd been in a deep sleep, unable to wake herself. Her children's voices finally pulled her from her stupor. "Mommy!" they cried, rushing to her side as she stirred.
Roxanne was stunned, then her awareness returned. She tried to sit up. "Sorry, I didn't mean to sleep so long."
She was about to mention taking Archie and Benny to school when they gently pushed her back down.
"Mommy, you're sick. We got a leave of absence to stay home and care for you," they said seriously.
Only then did Roxanne realize how ill she was. She was deeply touched by their concern.
