Chapter 305: Overtired

Just as Roxanne was stumped, Lucian appeared in the doorway. Seeing her in bed, he frowned. A single glance revealed her fever was worse than before.

"Mr. Farwell," Roxanne greeted him stiffly, avoiding his gaze. She had no intention of engaging him further.

Sensing her distance, Lucian's eyes darkened. He turned to Sonny, saying, "Please examine her."

Sonny nodded, stepping forward to check Roxanne. She knitted her brows at the unfamiliar man in her bedroom, but her fever-addled mind prevented a timely reaction.

"This is the Farwell family doctor. I brought him to examine you," Lucian said softly.

Resistance flickered in Roxanne's eyes. The Farwells' family doctor? What's going on? she thought.

"I'm a doctor myself. I know my condition," she coldly refused. "If it's serious, I'll go to the hospital."

Lucian frowned, attempting to break through her defiance. "If you could get up, would you be lying down and talking to me now?"

Roxanne was taken aback. Her high fever left her weak, and Lysa wasn't there to help her sit up when Lucian arrived. Forcing herself upright would only expose her weakness. Yet, she didn't know how to accept his help.

As she considered refusing, he said, "Essie will be upset if you're sick. What happened before already made her unstable. I don't want to upset her again."

The girl, Essie, nodded fervently, her eyes and nose red. She grasped Roxanne's arm, saying with concern, "Ms. Jarvis, please let the doctor examine you."

Seeing Essie's distress, Roxanne couldn't refuse.

After a pause, she agreed. Archie and Benny, relieved their mother wasn't resisting, quickly moved aside to give Sonny space.

After a thorough examination, Sonny reported to Lucian, "Ms. Jarvis has a fever from overexertion, weakening her immune system. She caught a cold, hence the high fever. I'll prepare an IV drip."

Lucian nodded, his gaze falling on Roxanne. Regret clouded his expression. She'd caught the cold from being drenched in the rain the previous nightโ€”partly his fault. The rain was heavy; he should have insisted on taking her to the parking lot or given her his umbrella.

Sensing his gaze, Roxanne lowered her eyes. She knew her fever stemmed from her stubbornness the day before. Maybe he thinks I'm making things worse, she thought self-deprecatingly.
