Chapter 309: No Hope
At Pearson Group, Charles stood before Aubree, frowning. "Ms. Pearson," he began, "someone overseas is intentionally obstructing our investigation into Roxanne's affairs, particularly those concerning the children. Soโ"
Aubree interrupted. "So you found nothing!"
Charles fell silent. A tense atmosphere filled the office.
Aubree stared at him for a long time before snapping, "What use are you if you can't find anything after all this time?"
Before Charles could respond, she snarled, "Get out!"
He immediately left.
Aubree watched the door close, huffing in anger. Days had passed since Lucian announced his intention to break off their engagement, yet she still lacked the leverage to blackmail Roxanne.
"If Lucian publicizes our breakup," she mused, "that bitch will likely become Mrs. Farwell. She stole my place six years ago, and now, six years later, she's still haunting me! I'm already humiliated by the breakup. If she steals Lucian again, everyone will laugh at me! No! Roxanne will not become Mrs. Farwell."
After sitting in her office for a while, Aubree narrowed her eyes and called Sonya.
Sonya, having just finished breakfast, felt a pang of guilt upon seeing Aubree's incoming call. She'd promised to help convince Lucian to reconsider after he calmed down, but hadn't spoken to him in two days. Her voice was softer than usual when she answered. "Aubree, it's early. Is something wrong?"
Despite her own scowl, Aubree spoke softly. "Mrs. Farwell, are you angry with me?"
Sonya frowned. "What are you talking about? Why would I be angry?"
Aubree suppressed her resentment, murmuring sadly, "You haven't called in days. I thought you'd forgotten me after Lucian's announcement."
Aubree's misery wasn't surprising to Sonya, who felt even guiltier. She sighed. "I've been busy. And your situation with Lucian" She paused, then added, "Don't worry. I'll talk to him. Your engagement can't just end like this."
Aubree's voice, tinged with bitterness, followed. "Mrs. Farwell, haven't I told you? I consider you a mother. Even without Lucian, I'll respect and admire you. But about the engagementHe's made his decision. I know Lucian isn't easy to convince, so I've given up hope. All I want is for our relationship to remain the same."
Sonya's heart ached. "Of course," she whispered.
A flash of disdain crossed Aubree's eyes, but she said, "When are you free, Mrs. Farwell? I need to buy clothes and would appreciate your opinion."
"This weekend, perhaps," Sonya replied, smiling.
Aubree agreed, flattering Sonya further before ending the call.
