Chapter 308: Only That Man

Once fully recovered, she sent the children to kindergarten and was about to drive to the research institute when her phone rang. The caller ID showed it was Harvey, her professor.

Assuming it concerned her project, Roxanne answered, "Professor Lambert, what's wrong?"

Harvey's tone was grave. "Have you offended someone?"

Roxanne was puzzled. "What do you mean?"

"Someone's been investigating your time abroad," Harvey said grimly. "I'm asking if you angered anyone there. They seem intent on making a scene about it."

Roxanne's heart sank. "Can we find out who it is?"

"I'm afraid not. My influence is primarily in medical matters. This person is more powerful; I can't identify them."

Roxanne bit her lip. A thought struck her. Lucian had shown curiosity about her overseas experiences when she treated Alfred. He'd also repeatedly asked about Archie and Benny's father. Now, having spent time with the boys, was he doubting their parentage? Was he conducting the overseas investigation? Professor Lambert had said the other party was more influential.

Panic surged. If Lucian discovered the truth, would he take Archie and Benny away?

Her voice grew tense. "Do you know what they're investigating?"

Harvey replied, "They seem very interested in your social life over the past few years. They're looking into the people you interacted with."

I knew it, Roxanne thought, pinching her palm to steady herself. "Have they found anything out?" If Lucian knows, I must prepare.

Harvey reassured her softly, "While I can't stop the investigation, I can prevent further inquiries. After noticing it, I did everything possible to conceal your past few years. I don't think they've uncovered anything yet."

Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."

Harvey replied simply, "It's nothing. Be more careful. I could protect you abroad, but at the institute, you need to be extra cautious. You might inadvertently cross someone."

Roxanne bit her lip. She couldn't recall crossing anyone. Only one person would investigate her past: that man. But she saw no need to tell Harvey.

After a pause, she said, "Professor Lambert, there's something I need to ask."

"Speak freely," Harvey agreed.

"Regardless, please keep Archie and Benny's history secret. Don't let anyone know I was pregnant when I left the country…" If they find that out, they'll easily discover the children's father.

Harvey didn't press for details and agreed.
