Chapter 317: Stepping Into the Farwell Family

"Speaking of which," Sonya said, glancing at her son, "Aubree and I haven't had lunch yet. Go ask someone to order some food."

Lucian observed his mother's expression. He sensed she wanted to speak privately with Aubree and, rather than pointing it out, simply nodded and left the ward. Once the door closed, Sonya took Aubree's hand.

Aubree was confused. "What's this about, Mrs. Farwell?" she asked. She wondered why Sonya had dismissed Lucian instead of speaking directly. Did Sonya suspect this was all a ruse? The thought made her panic slightly, and her smile became strained.

"Now that Lucian's gone," Sonya said, her tone more casual, "I can speak frankly."

Aubree nodded obediently. "Please do."

"You understand my intentions," Sonya continued. "It's not essential that Lucian care for you; a nurse could do a better job. I wanted him to tend to you so you could resolve your misunderstandings. After all, you were in love for years, and he's not heartless."

Aubree was stunned, then breathed deeply and smiled. "I know. Thank you, Mrs. Farwell. I'll take this opportunity."

Sonya nodded. "However, Lucian's accustomed to luxury and may not know how to properly care for someone. This period might be difficult for you."

Aubree shook her head and smiled. "I don't think it will be difficult. I'm easy to care for. As long as I'm with Lucian, I'll be happy." She didn't need excellent care; she just needed him to stop seeing that woman.

Sonya, touched by Aubree's devotion, said, "Good girl. Aside from you, I can't imagine anyone else as Mrs. Farwell."

Aubree lowered her eyes shyly. "You flatter me, Mrs. Farwell. I just hope Lucian won't resent me because of our misunderstandings. I don't dare think beyond that."

Sonya sighed. What a good girl. Why can't my son see this? Why is he fixated on Roxanne? Thankfully, I'm still here. I won't let that woman into the Farwell family!

A storm brewed in Aubree's heart. Sonya had clearly chosen her as her daughter-in-law. Keeping Lucian close would prevent him from seeing his mistress. If Charles and the others work harder, we'll uncover the biological father of those children. Then Roxanne will be ruined!

They were about to continue when they heard footsteps outside.

Sonya cleared her throat, composed herself, and inquired about Aubree's injuries. Aubree played along.

Lucian immediately understood what had transpired upon entering and glancing at them. They'd clearly discussed something private. However, respecting their wish for secrecy, he didn't question them. He went to the bedside and placed the lunchbox on the table.
