Chapter 316: Troublesome

Sonya and the others remained at Aubree's bedside in the ward. Aubree, however, was tired of their presence. She had only used Sonya to get closer to Lucian. Now that he had agreed to stay, she grew impatient with the lingering visitors. Despite this, she maintained a pleasant facade.

"Aubree, you're the patient," Sonya said, stroking Aubree's cast. "You should rest these next two days and let Lucian run errands for you."

Aubree was weary of Sonya's constant concern. With a forced smile, she replied, "Thank you, Mrs. Farwell. I'll keep that in mind, but" She glanced at Lucian standing near the door, then bit her lip and murmured, "I'm already so grateful Lucian is here. I can't trouble him any further."

Sonya, noticing Lucian still standing far from Aubree, exclaimed, "Why are you standing in the corner? Aubree is a girl; girls can be shy. Remember that while caring for her these next few days. Be more proactive. Don't make her ask for help."

Lucian merely frowned.

Aubree, putting on a sad expression, defended him. "Mrs. Farwell, Lucian works very hard. After work, he deserves his free time and rest. Please don't insist he stay. I can manage. You don't need to worry."

Sonya's expression softened at Aubree's understanding.

Moments later, Aubree, uncomfortable after lying down, tried to sit up, forgetting her cast. She gasped in pain.

"Be careful, Aubree!" Gina rushed to her daughter's side, her heart aching.

"I'm fine, Mom," Aubree said, smiling. "I'm just not used to the cast. See? I can manage with one arm. It just takes time." She caressed her arm, her eyes frequently glancing at Sonya, who seemed touched by her resilience.

Seeing Aubree's discomfort, Sonya's heart softened further. "Don't be so strong. Let Lucian take care of you. He agreed. Don't feel sorry. You must be bored here, so I'll visit whenever I can."

Aubree was surprised by Sonya's attentiveness. She stole a glance at Lucian.

Lucian, understanding his mother's nature, knew arguing was futile. She had already decided he would stay. He conceded, "I'm not swamped with work these next few days, so I can come. After all, you were hurt because of my mother. I should thank you."

Sonya beamed. "See? No more excuses."

Aubree smiled gratefully. "Thank you."

Privately, however, she knew better. While Lucian agreed to stay, he'd emphasized it was because she saved his mother. Essentially, their connection was transactional. Does he really want to keep this distance between us?
