Chapter 332: Trouble Brews for Roxanne

Aubree emerged from the stairwell, her expression drastically changing. She hurried into the washroom, gritting her teeth and gently knocking her plaster cast against the wall. Pain contorted her face.

Checking the time, she saw it was Sonya's usual visiting hour. Aubree rushed back up the stairs to her ward. The intense pain in her arm, coupled with climbing six or seven flights of stairs, left her drenched in sweat upon her return.

Lucian, waiting inside, was about to call her when he heard a commotion. After seeing Roxanne leave with the children, he went to the orthopedic department to find Aubree. Unsuccessful, he returned to her ward, only to find her still absent.

"Lucian, you're back," she said, her voice tinged with desolation.

He nodded. "Where did you go?"

Aubree offered an awkward smile. "After leaving orthopedics, I went to pediatrics, thinking you were there. Not finding you, I asked the doctor about Ms. Jarvis's son, hoping to help."

Lucian replied flatly, "If she needs help, she'll ask."

Though he said this, Lucian knew Roxanne would rarely ask for help unless truly desperate.

Aubree nodded and lay back down. "I got ahead of myself. The doctor said it wasn't serious."

A knock interrupted them. Sonya entered, her expression concerned. She sat beside Aubree's bed. "How are you feeling? Does your arm hurt? Did Lucian take good care of you?"

Aubree gave Lucian a meek glance before smiling cordially. "Yes, he did. Thank you for your concern, Mrs. Farwell. My injury's improving; you don't need to come every day."

Sonya protested, "That's not acceptable. I need to ensure you're fully recovered."

Aubree smiled gratefully. Sonya sympathetically stroked the cast. "Fractures usually take a hundred days to heal. Since you'll be bored, I don't mind keeping you company."

Noticing Aubree's sweat, Sonya worried. "Why are you sweating? Were you lying down? Is your arm hurting again?" Aubree squirmed, trying to hide her arm. "I was bored, so I climbed the stairs."

Sonya looked dubious, then at Lucian. (The following sentence is removed as it is an advertisement)

Lucian, unaware of Aubree's stair climb, frowned. Aubree's excuse seemed plausible.

"Wasn't Lucian with you?" Sonya asked.

Aubree glanced instinctively at Lucian, her eyes sparkling as if searching for an excuse for him.

Seeing Aubree's discomfort, Sonya frowned and asked Lucian, "Where were you while Aubree climbed the stairs?" Lucian remained silent. If he told the truth, his mother would cause trouble for Roxanne.
