Chapter 331: Something Is Wrong
Aubree glanced down at her cast arm before looking back at Roxanne, feigning nonchalance. "My injury's nothing. I was accidentally hit by a car shopping with Mrs. Farwell two days ago. Luckily, she was unharmed."
Aubree's words clearly hinted at an attempt to save Sonya.
Roxanne, understanding the implication, offered a strained smile. "Ms. Pearson, given your close relationship with Mrs. Farwell, I'm sure your marriage into the Pearson family will be smooth. If there's nothing else, I should leave. It's late, and the children are tired."
Before Aubree could reply, Roxanne turned to go. She was immediately stopped by a hand on her wrist.
Frowning, Roxanne turned to see Aubree.
Aubree's expression was apologetic. "Actually, I need to apologize."
Roxanne's suspicion was piqued. She wasn't sure what Aubree was planning.
"That's not necessary," Roxanne said, pursing her lips. "Ms. Pearson, you have nothing to apologize for."
Despite Aubree's past actions against her and her sons, Roxanne didn't want an apology. One couldn't undo Aubree's past misdeeds. Furthermore, Roxanne had ended her involvement with Lucian and Aubree. She only wanted to avoid further trouble from them.
However, Aubree, insistent on apologizing, held Roxanne's wrist firmly. "Getting the boys expelled was a reckless mistake. The thought of Lucian returning to you after six years terrified me. I tried to create distance between you. Hurting the children was wrong. Please forgive me."
Although Roxanne detected mockery in Aubree's words, she gave a casual nod. "Fine, I forgive you, provided you never harm Archie and Benny again. And don't worryโLucian has always been interested in you, not me. There's no chance of him returning, so stop harassing me." Roxanne wanted the conversation to end. Seeing that Aubree still held her wrist, she frowned and tried to pull free.
Unexpectedly, as her hand met Aubree's, Aubree released her grip and stumbled, leaning against the wall.
Roxanne's expression darkened. "What are you doing?"
Aubree, steadying herself, looked surprised. "Excuse me. My arm hurts, and I'm off-balance. That's why I fell."
Without waiting for a reply, Aubree continued in a considerate tone, "I'm fine, and thankful for your forgiveness. The children need rest, you should take them home."
With a cordial smile, Aubree left.
As Roxanne watched her go, a feeling of unease settled over her. Yet, seeing nothing overtly wrong and accepting Aubree's claim of being fine, Roxanne dismissed her concerns and went downstairs to take the children home.
