Chapter 356: Nothing Is More Important
Sonya's blood pressure spiked after the call ended. She remained furious even after arriving at the hospital. For years, she'd wanted Lucian to marry Aubree, so the news of his planned breakup was unacceptable.
Only when she reached Aubree's door did worry replace her anger. Aubree was curled up in bed, seemingly asleep. Sonya tiptoed in to check on her. Aubree was much thinner than before, the effects of her injury evident. Even asleep, her brow was furrowed, indicating discomfort. This only intensified Sonya's guilt. "I'm here, Aubree," Sonya whispered.
Aubree's brow furrowed further at the sound of Sonya's voice. Only after a moment did she regain her senses. "I didn't expect you so soon, Mrs. Farwell." Sonya quickly stopped Aubree from sitting up. "It's alright. You don't need to get up."
After examining Aubree's injured arm, Sonya asked concernedly, "How's your arm? I can get someone to check it."
Aubree touched her arm, then smiled apologetically. "It doesn't hurt anymore. I made a fuss over nothing. I'm sorry for troubling you so late, Mrs. Farwell."
Sonya sighed in relief. "I'm glad you're alright."
Aubree looked expectantly behind Sonya, then lowered her eyes in disappointment. "Where's Lucian, Mrs. Farwell? Is he still working?" she asked, feigning unconcern.
The mention of Lucian reignited Sonya's anger, but for Aubree's sake, she suppressed it. "Lucian's gone home. Essie isn't feeling well, so I'm afraid he won't beโฆ"
"He should stay home with Essie," Aubree said warmly. "My arm's fine. Besides, Essie is more important."
Sonya, seeing Aubree's understanding, felt even guiltier about her son's actions. "You're the best daughter-in-law anyone could ask for. I'll get Lucian to marry you as soon as you recover!"
Aubree nodded shyly. Unseen by Sonya, a devious smirk played on Aubree's lips.
It can't be a coincidence that the little brat got sick as soon as I left Roxanne's! Aubree thought, furious that her plan to keep Lucian had been thwarted by a little girl. She vowed to deal with both Roxanne and Estella.
After a moment, Aubree looked up. "Mrs. Farwell, Essie likes Ms. Jarvis, doesn't she? Would spending more time with Ms. Jarvis help her?"
Sonya raised an eyebrow. "I thought you didn't like Roxanne."
"I was afraid she'd steal Lucian, but I was wrong. There's nothing I can do if she's the one Lucian loves. Besides, nothing is more important than Estella's well-being," Aubree replied with a bitter smile.
