Roxanne felt much better when she woke the next morning. Remembering she was to send the children to kindergarten, she rose and washed before going downstairs. There, she was greeted by the sight of her two sons waiting at the door.
Excited to go to kindergarten, Archie and Benny had woken early to wait for their mother. They had initially planned to knock, but decided against it, knowing she hadn't felt well. They patiently waited, unwilling to disturb her rest.
When Roxanne appeared, the boys' eyes lit up. "Mommy!"
Roxanne stroked their heads. "Come along, then. Let's have breakfast before I take you to kindergarten."
The boys nodded, holding her hand on either side, occasionally glancing up to check on her recovery.
Downstairs, Lysa had already prepared breakfast, and Madilyn was seated at the table. Seeing them, Madilyn stood and looked at Roxanne. "How are you feeling?"
"Much better," Roxanne smiled. "I'll take them to kindergarten later."
Madilyn nodded in relief. "I'll leave then." She had come early out of concern for Roxanne's health.
Roxanne was about to invite her to breakfast when Madilyn said, "I've already eaten. Enjoy your breakfast. I'll go now." Roxanne didn't insist.
After saying goodbye to the boys, Madilyn left. Roxanne seated the children at the table and began to serve them, but the boys beat her to it, serving her breakfast and urging, in their squeaky voices, "Mommy, please eat!"
Roxanne was briefly surprised, then smiled warmly. "Thank you, darlings."
The doorbell rang during breakfast. Thinking it was Madilyn returning, Roxanne told the boys to continue eating while she answered the door.
She was stunned by who stood there: Lucian, sharply dressed in a suit, meticulously combed hair, holding Estella's hand and staring meaningfully at Roxanne. Estella gazed blankly at Roxanne, her eyes filled with concern. Father and daughter stood motionless.
It took Roxanne a moment to recover. She furrowed her brows at Lucian. "Mr. Farwell, what are you doing here so early?" Unable to glare at Estella, she confronted Lucian.
Estella tugged on her sleeve. Looking down, Roxanne saw Estella's concerned expression. Making eye contact, Estella carefully asked, "Ms. Jarvis, are you feeling better?"
Roxanne was taken aback. She didn't understand the question.
Noticing her confusion, Lucian explained in a deep voice, "When I came home yesterday, Essie smelled you on me and asked what happened. I had to tell her you weren't feeling well."
Roxanne frowned. "I'm fine. Why did you tell her?" She hadn't wanted Estella to worry, but Estella, misinterpreting this, pouted, thinking Roxanne didn't want to see her.
