Listen to this chapter:

Jack stayed behind to finish some work, bidding Larry and Roxanne farewell as they left the orphanage.

Larry smiled at Roxanne. "So, what do you think of the medical consultation? Judging by Mr. Damaris's reaction, you achieved your objective."

Only then did Roxanne realize she'd been so focused on the children that she'd forgotten her primary goal: securing the Damaris family's support. The children's well-being, however, had become paramount. She had helped them and, as evidenced by his earlier behavior, won Jack over simultaneously. Her eyes sparkled with excitement. Turning to Larry, she thanked him, "Thank you for helping me today."

Larry raised an eyebrow. "I don't recall helping you at all."

Roxanne began listing his supposed assistance. "This morning, you must have told Mr. Damaris good things about me. Your presence calmed my nerves. And when Dr. Hopp made things difficult, you defended me."

Seeing her exaggeration, Larry interrupted. "I only mentioned to Mr. Damaris that you were Professor Lambert's student. Jack noticed your skill independently. There's no need to thank me."

Roxanne smiled. Larry's eyes darkened as he added meaningfully, "If you want to thank someone, thank Mr. Queen."

Roxanne was surprised but quickly recovered. "I don't know anything about those supplies, Larry. Please don't misunderstand." Larry remained skeptical. "If I recall correctly, the Queen family facilitated your consultation, and you know the person who delivered the supplies." The supplies were clearly intended for Roxanne, delivered by someone she knew.

Roxanne tried to clarify. "Mr. Tanner from Queen Group handles the herbs; I know him from the research institute. Mr. Queen likely sent him to help. There's nothing between us."

Larry studied her carefully. Seeing no deception, he nodded. "Fine. But remember Archie and Benny's feelings when you choose a partner. Whoever you choose will be their father. They're growing up and will have their own opinions."

Roxanne nodded. "I understand."

The mention of Archie and Benny brought to mind the orphanage children, plunging Roxanne into melancholy. Larry, sensing her distress, patted her arm. "We've done what we could. Let's leave the rest to fate. Those children are pitiful. I hope God shows them mercy."

Roxanne nodded, feeling helpless. If only my medical skill were better; if only I'd studied ancient medicine more thoroughly...

Larry consoled her, "Don't overthink it. It's late. Archie and Benny are waiting."

Roxanne snapped out of her reverie, said goodbye, and left.
