Listen to this chapter:

It was late when Roxanne arrived home, but Archie and Benny were still awake. Hearing her on the stairs, they cautiously opened their bedroom door and peeked out.

The sight of the boys reminded Roxanne of the children at the orphanage, and a heavy sadness settled over her.

Seeing her expression, the boys rushed to her, concern etched on their faces. "Mommy, what's wrong? Did something happen at the hospital today?"

Roxanne forced a smile and led them back to their room. The boys flanked her, their gazes earnest. "Mommy, how are the children in the orphanage?"

Roxanne shook her head sadly. "They don't have parents. Some were abandoned because they were sick, but they're still very good and understanding." Images of the children—those lying in beds, those sent to the hospital where doctors were helpless—flashed through her mind. Even so, she recalled how grateful the children had been to their doctors.

Archie and Benny exchanged a serious look. "Are the children very ill?" they asked gently.

Roxanne nodded. "Some were abandoned because their parents couldn't afford their treatment."

"Mommy, can't you save them?" Benny asked innocently, seeing Roxanne as the world's best doctor, capable of curing anything.

Roxanne patted his head, resignation in her touch. "I'm sorry, darling. I'm not as capable as you think. There are many diseases I can't cure."

Archie and Benny's faces fell, but then they offered words of comfort. "Never mind, Mommy. Someone will find a way to save them! Children are blessed; we'll grow up healthy!"

Roxanne was more despondent than her sons about the sick children at the orphanage, but their words warmed her heart. She smiled, saying, "That's what I think, too."

"But they don't have parents. They must be sad," Benny said, his gaze earnest. "I have Mommy, but sometimes I wish Daddy were here. Those children don't even have a mommy. I feel sorry for them."

Roxanne managed a small smile. "Their new mommies and daddies will bring them home soon."

Benny tilted his head. "Do the people at the orphanage treat them well? Do they eat and sleep well?"

Roxanne grinned, knowing his worry. “They're treated well. Mr. Queen donated supplies this afternoon, so things will improve. If you're still worried, we can visit them someday."

Archie and Benny's eyes widened. "Really? Can we really visit them?"

Roxanne nodded, smiling.

"We need to bring lots of delicious food and toys!" the boys exclaimed.

Roxanne was deeply touched by their compassion.
