Chapter 585

โ€œBy the way, how did you injure your leg?โ€ Jack asked curiously during their journey.

Roxanneโ€™s heart skipped a beat, recalling the incident. She steadied herself and replied calmly, โ€œI accidentally cut myself on a sharp conch shell two days ago during an outing. Itโ€™s nothing serious.โ€

Jack, unaware of the details, chuckled. โ€œIโ€™m surprised a conch shell got you. You seem so vigilant on duty.โ€

Roxanne smiled, pressing her lips together. โ€œI didnโ€™t think it would happen to me either.โ€

They enjoyed lively conversation throughout the journey. Upon arriving at Roxanneโ€™s residence, Jack helped her from the car. They continued their cheerful banter, sharing amusing medical anecdotes.

As Roxanne beamed, a cold voice cut through the air from a distance. โ€œIt seems Mr. Damaris is in good spirits.โ€

Lucian stood before the mansion, his expression impassive.

Roxanneโ€™s smile vanished instantly at the sound of his voice. Jack, noticing the change in her demeanor, ceased smiling and gave Lucian a quizzical look, raising an eyebrow. โ€œDo you two know each other?โ€

Both Lucian and Jack hailed from prominent Horington families. Though the Damaris family had been reclusive for years, Jack recognized Lucian from a previous encounter.

Jack was aware of Roxanneโ€™s connection to the Queen familyโ€”a renowned doctor and a pharmaceutical companyโ€”making their association somewhat understandable. However, he was surprised by her acquaintance with Lucian.

Roxanne, guarded, glanced at Lucian. Regaining her composure, she answered Jack, โ€œMr. Farwell was present when I treated Old Mr. Queen.โ€

In other words, their acquaintance stemmed from her treatment of Alfred. Jack nodded in understanding.

By then, Lucian stood before them. Hearing Roxanneโ€™s explanation, he briefly glanced at Jack before his expression hardened. He remembered Jonathanโ€™s instruction for Roxanne to maintain contact with Jack due to their collaboration. However, witnessing their closeness filled him with frustration.

Knowing Roxanneโ€™s intentions, Lucian refused to yield. โ€œYour leg is injured. Why did you leave the house? Where is Lysa? Why wasnโ€™t she with you?โ€

Lucianโ€™s pointed questions seemingly ignored Jackโ€™s presence. Jackโ€™s confusion deepened. Despite Roxanneโ€™s claim of mere acquaintance, Lucianโ€™s knowledge of her injury and home life suggested a closer relationship.

Roxanne knew Lucianโ€™s actions were deliberate. She frowned subtly, distancing herself. โ€œThank you for your concern, Mr. Farwell. My leg is fine.โ€

Lucianโ€™s irritation flared at Roxanneโ€™s attempt to distance herself. He turned to Jack. โ€œIโ€™ve heard of Ms. Jarvisโ€™s collaboration with the Damaris family. It must be progressing well, I presume?โ€

Jack, unaware of their true relationship, nodded. โ€œMs. Jarvis is highly capable, and my grandfather is very impressed with her.โ€

He mistook Lucianโ€™s words for polite conversation, but Lucianโ€™s intent was clear: he wanted Jack to leave. โ€œIโ€™m glad the collaboration is proceeding smoothly, but I hope you two maintain a professional distance. Thank you for seeing Ms. Jarvis home, Mr. Damaris. Iโ€™ll take it from here. You may leave now.โ€
