Chapter 597
Since Roxanne's return, their interactions had been more frequent than Jonathan realized. Lucian, unbeknownst to Jonathan, had been consistently assisting Roxanne, even orchestrating her cooperation with the Damaris family. Despite their deep misunderstanding six years prior, Lucian's efforts warranted at least some gratitude from Roxanne, even if reconciliation wasn't her intention. Furthermore, he had created ample opportunities for them to spend quality time together. Roxanne wasn't heartless, so Lucian wondered why she remained unmoved. He frowned, his expression dark.
Jonathan's concerns mirrored his own. He'd previously perceived Roxanne as cruel when he believed she'd abandoned Estella. Now, despite their resolved misunderstanding, she remained distant. Again, the question of Roxanne's true nature arose.
"If Dr. Jarvis was truly unmoved, how did you spend your vacation? Did you go your separate ways?" Jonathan inquired.
Lucian shook his head. "I can't fathom her. Before the vacation ended, I honestly felt she was being friendly."
Jonathan nodded, understanding. "So, your relationship had its ups and downs, but with moments of tenderness?"
Lucian nodded indifferently. Jonathan felt a headache coming on. Their relationship was incomprehensible. He'd assumed Roxanne was always cold towards Lucian. The existence of closeness between them was unexpected. How, then, did they drift apart after such moments?
Confused, Jonathan looked at Lucian, almost ready to give up. If Lucian couldn't understand their dynamic, how could he? Then, he said, "Lucian, what do you want from Dr. Jarvis?" He genuinely wanted to help Lucian.
Lucian frowned, silent for a moment.
"Do you want to reconcile? To marry her again?" Jonathan pressed. Estella adored her mother, and Jonathan himself believed Roxanne was right for Lucian.
Lucian looked at him, neither confirming nor denying. Silence, it seemed, was assent.
Seeing this, Jonathan decided to urge him on. "Then discuss your feelings with Dr. Jarvis. Her attitude towards you is sometimes warm. Perhaps she's just as unsure of your intentions as you are of hers." He studied Lucian's expression. "If this continues, with its constant ups and downs, you'll likely end up enemies. That's not what you want, is it?"
Lucian frowned, looking weary. "Then what do you suggest? How should I explain it to her?"
