Chapter 605
Holding that thought, Jonathan couldn't resist asking, "What did you write?"
Lucian, however, had no intention of elaborating, as Roxanne hadn't even mentioned the card. In fact, when he'd asked her about it, she'd ignored him, leaving him wondering if she'd even seen it. But if she hadn't read it, how would she have known he'd sent the flowers?
He continued to ponder. Since she'd called, she must have read the card but was unwilling to discuss it. Could there be something wrong with its contents?
Meanwhile, Jonathan, after waiting patiently, pressed, "What did you write? If you don't tell me, how will I know what the problem is?"
Only then did Lucian relent. Upon hearing the contents, Jonathan rubbed his forehead. "What do you mean by 'let's be honest with each other'? Aren't you forcing Ms. Jarvis to speculate? Wouldn't it have been better to directly express your feelings?"
"If you want Roxanne to admit her feelings, you have to do it first!" he exclaimed.
Lucian glanced at him. "She called after receiving the flowers, and I followed your instructions."
Jonathan's hope for his friend was rekindled. "What did you do? Did you confess?"
Thinking back to their conversation, Lucian nodded without further explanation.
Intrigued, Jonathan asked, "What did you say?"
"I asked her if she was willing to return to my side," Lucian replied.
"And?" Jonathan pressed.
A silence fell over the car before Lucian's voice rang out. "She didn't say anything."
After a few seconds of contemplation, Jonathan smiled reassuringly. "Not saying anything is better than outright rejectionโ"
Before he could finish, Lucian continued, "I then told her that Essie needed a mother and since she was fond of Essie..."
Jonathan was dumbfounded. He hadn't expected such candor; he'd only suggested Lucian confess his feelings. He knew Lucian often used Estella as a pretext to soften Roxanne's stance, but he hadn't anticipated her inclusion in such a delicate situation. Was he pursuing Roxanne, or was Estella doing the pursuing?
"What the hell did I do wrong?" Lucian asked solemnly. "Or is your method useless?"
Lucian's accusation caused Jonathan to shake his head in resignation. "Lucian, that's not how you court a girl, or confess to her."
Lucian looked clueless and frustrated.
"By bringing up Estella unnecessarily, it could be interpreted as using her to pressure Dr. Jarvis," Jonathan explained.
Lucian's frown deepened. "Then what should I do?"
"To court a girl, you need to soften your approach," Jonathan advised. "Remember, you're pursuing her; it has nothing to do with Estella. By saying what you said, Dr. Jarvis might think you're giving her the flowers only to secure a mother for Estella. Without knowing your true feelings, there's no way she'll agree to be with you."
Lucian listened intently, his exasperation growing. He'd never courted anyone before and hadn't realized it would be so complicated. Even confessing his feelings seemed like an art.
